Oh you know.... just another day of online 2nd grade “learning."

I'll preface this story by saying, his teachers?? Are AWESOME! The way they are trying to keep kids' focused and paying attention through a computer screen, is applaud-worthy. Their efforts are phenomenal and when I'm listening in on Jackson's lessons, and I hear "Suzy, turn your camera on" or "Bobby, put down your phone" or "Jenny, stop typing in the chat" or "Jimmy, no eating during lessons" --- well, I just don't envy teachers right now. And I can't even imagine the hours 'behind the scenes' they are putting in to turn their lessons and worksheets and resources into a format that works in this online environment. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

But this ENVIRONMENT? Is toxic. 🚫

Jackson had to take a test on yet ANOTHER new website and parents were instructed to "not hover/help" because it was a placement test... well this website didn't confirm when the test was actually over and instead, it moved him on inconspicuously to another program on the site that still looked like the test. Nearly an hour and 15 mins later, I messaged his teacher and told her "I'm really sorry, but I'm letting him be done because over an hour for an online test for a 7 year old sitting in a room by himself, is obnoxious. And to top it off, the test looked like it had no end in sight."

She apologized of course, and said other parents/students said the same thing about not realizing when the test was even over. 🤷‍♀️

👉 Have you ever seen a 7 year old under actual stress? It's heartbreaking and enough to make you cry non-stop for a week. 😢

When I forced him to stop because he was visually full of anxiety, he still didn't want to {even though it was over, but we didn't know this}. He didn't want to stop because he was worried he'd get in trouble for not finishing. But he spent so much time on this placement test, it caused him to miss his next Google meet which was for math {with a different teacher because his school has even the K-2 students switching "meets"/classes literally aaaaallllll day long for different subjects}. So he missed a math test and was extremely upset because he hasn’t missed ANY Google meet yet, and is super proud of himself because he knows he’s ONE of only TWO second graders that’s had perfect ONLINE attendance since the first day of school.

Until today’s b.s. 😠

Hence laying on the kitchen floor full of anxiety that a 7 year old should never have to feel. He still has to take the math test, but I'm letting him do it later because honestly, he's been a trooper. 🌟

But...

THIS.
INSANITY.
MUST.
END.

Our children need to be with their teachers IN the classroom.

❓❓❓ More food for thought... restaurants, bars & gyms are open and everyone has a CHOICE whether to go or not based on their family situation, but SCHOOLS remain CLOSED and our children are denied their constitutional RIGHT to a proper education while adults are free to grab a burger & wine on their way back from sweating it out on the treadmill?!?

👉 TO BE CLEAR for those who may misinterpret my message... I'm not saying we shouldn't all take recommended precautions in all the locations I just mentioned. But I AM saying, I'm over the double standards and the hypocrisy of what we're told is "safe" vs "not safe" --- ESPECIALLY when it directly affects the well-being of children.
