Then I turned to the crimson light to my left, and got a flash of adark haired, dark robed woman. The meditations I was teaching that daywere on the Arthurian Mysteries, so the appearance of the Dali Lama,Buddha, Mary, and Jesus were startling. At last a more familiar andappropriate figure – was it the Lady of the Lake? Vivian? Nimue? Morgan Le Fey perhaps? They are all figures within Arthurianmythology. Then the darkness swirled within the red to reveal the oldwizard Merlin.

As in the poetry of True Thomas, these Witches described three roads or three lines. The first was a straight line, narrow and true. This related to the mysteries of the sacred king and the dragon of the land. The second was a bent line calling those who are faery touched. The last was the Witch’s path, the crooked line of cunning and unmaking. Another variation of this is found in the saying “By a bent line, by a straight line, by a crooked line.”

The Garden of the Gods is the second expression of the Great Work, the collective communal expression. The Garden of the Gods goes back to the time before time, when the gods and humans were in harmony. It is the primeval vision of the Earth, unspoiled. It is the True Garden of Union. Many mythos have a theology, a belief, that we were once in a perfect state of grace, and then fell. In this fall we lost innocence and, as a punishment, were cast out of the primordial garden. The Wizard’s Way: A Book of the Old Religion
by Lou Percus

In this work unearthed from the 1980s, author Lou Percus offers a complete book on “the Old Religion” as a spiritual and magickal path for gay men, written by a gay man. Through the Fires also provides insights into the interactions between Witchcraft, paganism, and sexual identity from the early days of widespread American publishing about Witchcraft. A groundbreaking work for its time, it now offers us a perspective on what might have been, but for the author’s passing.

In these pages, you will find a complete and unique expression of Witchcraft, drawing upon traditional elements, but in their own particular configuration. From information about a complete pantheon of gods to the witch’s tools, spirituality versus religion, myth and ritual cycles, rites of passage, spell-work, and more, all with inclusion of and a specific focus on the needs of gay men.

Lou Percus was born in the American Midwest in 1953, served in the U.S. Navy, and was a contemporary of modern witches like Scott Cunningham and Raven Grimassi in the 1970s and ‘80s. Feeling disenfranchised from “fertility-based” Witchcraft, Percus created the system found in Through the Fires. Lou Percus passed beyond the veil in 1994 due to complications from AIDS, leaving his finished manuscript behind as part of his legacy.
