Today we're looking over some helpful advice from our 2017 contestants who screened at ACMI, Richard Truong:

"If you don't punch darts, start. If you don't drink energy drinks, start. And if your film gets shortlisted be sure to get wasted at the premiere cause if you don't you're not living.
But in all seriousness, make sure you plan locations, cast and crew well ahead of the 72 hours.

Our biggest mistake was audio. I, Richard Truong, forgot to bring a boom mic so we had to improvise on the day. We ended up buying a tiki torch from the reject shop and shoving the microphone between the holes. We all thought we were geniuses until we went into editing. Every shot we could literally hear the scraping of the torch against the microphone and a lot of our stuff was barely usable which hindered our chances of creating a compelling story. We had the shots but our audio was so shoddy it ended up hindering our final product. So yeah don't shove your shotgun mic into a tiki torch."

Check out a testimony from one of our 2016 contestants, Kiralee, who gives advice on time management:
"On the first night you get your prompt, so you should write the script that night and send it out to those involved so they're up to date when they arrive the next day to shoot. Buy food, charge cameras, set up what you can and get props and costumes organised. Also touch base with your actors so they can prepare as much as possible. And try to get a little sleep, even if it's only a few hours!"

WHAT IS FILMLY?
Filmly is a 72 hour film festival for emerging creatives to cut their teeth into the fast paced environment of filmmaking. Filmly is a stepping stone for under 25 year olds that are on their way to esteemed film festivals around the world.

Filmly Festival begins with an opening night to begin the 72 hours. From there, filmmakers have to write, film and edit their 4 – 8 minute short films, including the required stimuli (spoken line, object, sequence).

It was a great trivia night last week with Database. We are excited to have Database onboard to provide services for Filmly contestants through out the 72 hour challenge. Database will be running one of our Opening Nights on the 30th of June. Contestants who are needing access to locations, actors or equipment - Database will hook you up! You will be assisted for free by Database as though you are a member with them!
