I got really excited when I saw this idea for a FUN and 🌟🌟🌟EASY🌟🌟🌟 Easter treat. There is no shortage of great ideas of how to celebrate Easter with your kids. . . but sometimes (at least for me), there IS a shortage of ability/energy/chutzpah to turn those ideas into real things that happen. So when I saw this one, I thought, "Oh man, even I could do that!". So, not one to gatekeep, I wanted to share with you, too. 😊⁠

I’m excited to announce that little bub is here!!! Hurray!

First of all, THANK YOU to all of you who prayed for me. I did not expect that kind of support from strangers-turned-friends on the internet. Literally people from across the world(!!) messaged me to say they were praying for me as our due date neared. Unreal. It’s so cool to be part of God’s family. Big thanks!

Secondly, everything went smoothly! Little bub & I are doing well. We’re in postpartum bliss.

And finally, I wanted to let you know what you can expect from me over the coming weeks (months?). Here’s my very-loose-but-ultimately-noncommittal game plan:
✅ Snuggle, nurture, and bond with new my little baby. Heal and rest. Love on my older kiddos & husband. Eat lots of chocolate.
❌ Create New Posts - Lucky for me, past me created and scheduled lots of posts for the next few weeks. So any posts you see in the near future (or have seen in March in general) were pre-made and pre-scheduled. This doesn’t really change the experience on your end EXCEPT if you have something new you’re hoping I will post about. I’m sorry! I want to support you in your thing (book launch, etc.), but creating, writing, and posting new things isn’t currently in my wheelhouse. 🤷🏼‍♀️
❌ Join new collaborations and projects - I love a group giveaway! But if there’s an expectation for me to print labels, wrap books, and drop off packages, I know it’s not the right season for it. Maybe next time!!
❌ Take pics/videos to post - Even the cute little feet in this pic are a stock photo. 😬
✅ Comment & Like- I will still scroll through and comment on posts, respond to comments, like things, etc. But likely slowly.
✅ Respond to Messages - I’ll still respond! Though maybe not as promptly as usual.

Soooo…that’s my plan. I’ll hopefully still show up in your feed, and I look forward to hearing from you in the comments & messages! But nearly all my time, energy, and attention right now is toward my little fam. So the efforts here will be fewer and, frankly, worse. And that’s okay. I remember seeing "Air Pods" on a stocking stuffer list. What?! Absolutely not. Stocking stuffers have more qualifications than just being small. As a mom, I love stocking stuffers that. . .⁠
✅ Are affordable⁠
✅ Can be bought in packs (especially if you have multiple kids)⁠
✅ Fit in the stocking. . . but also take up a decent amount of it⁠
✅ Aren't junk⁠⁠⁠
So here are some stocking stuffers I love!⁠
🎄 A coloring book! My mom always gave us a coloring book or (when we got older) magazine. They look so cute poking out the top of the stocking, and they give the stocking structure to put the rest of the stuff in. (Link to the shown one in the bio!)⁠
🎄 A sweet treat (we always love candy canes)⁠
🎄 Some stickers (they come in a big pack. I love the PUFFY stickers for toddlers because they can get them off easily)⁠

This illustration is from A Little Christian's Animals (coming soon!). In putting it together, I learned that we know a LOT about what Egypt and its people looked like, because their climate was so dry that their artifacts are really well preserved. So we have jewelry and paintings and so much more that can point to what things looked like back then. ⁠

Thanksgiving is a week away! And while I know that toddlers don't necessarily "help" in the kitchen, inviting them to participate can be a lot of fun and give them a lot of pride! Here are three recipes they can contribute to. . .⁠
🦃⁠
1. Crescent Rolls - Let them roll them! Will they be perfect? Nope. But they'll still be yummy. 🤤⁠
2. Cranberry Sauce - Use your discretion with the stove portion, but your toddlers can definitely help combine and stir the ingredients before it gets move to the stove. (Watch they don't try and eat any cranberries.)⁠
3. Ambrosia - The perfect toddler dish! Help them measure things out, but then they can totally combine and stir the ingredients, all the way to it being finished! They'll have SO much pride when they see it on the Thanksgiving table!⁠

The research for the Daniel in the Lions' Den illustration TOTALLY surprised me! I think we're all used to seeing a young man in a dirty pit surrounded by lots of lions. ⁠

BUT did you know Daniel was NOT a young man at this time? After being in captivity for about 70 years, Daniel would have been around 80(!!) when he was thrown into the pit with these lions. ⁠

I had planned a very cute little dirty pit. . . but research revealed we needed to go in a different direction. Did you know Babylon, where this took place, has a VERY high water table? That means that if you dig hardly at all, you'll hit water. Digging a deep hole large enough to house a pride of angry lions would not have been possible. The den would have had to been built specifically for this purpose, and would likely have been built out of the same stones as the rest of the city of Babylon. ⁠

Still, we needed a way to show the depth of the building. Later, when the bad guys (and their families 😬) are thrown into the den, they are crushed by the lions "before they hit the floor", which means they don't just walk in like a normal room, but are thrown DOWN. We really inspired by how one artist (swipe!) depicted that detail.⁠

At Seedlings Books, we believe that the Bible is full of REAL events that REALLY happened in REAL places. If our illustrations can be inspired by geographic and historical accuracy, I think it's easier for kids to understand the reality of their occurrence. ⁠

It's important to have the rhythms of slowing down, being intentional, and making time for the important (but maybe not urgent) things in life. Easy? No. Important? Yes. So until today, I thought pigeons and doves were different animals. Am I alone in this? In doing research for the Little Christian's Animals Coloring & Activity book (which will include some great animal facts!), I learned that apparently doves are often referred to as “a pigeon with a good PR agent”. I knew they were similar, but apparently there's no scientific difference between the two! They're both in the Columbidae family with no real distinction, except that colloquially we call the smaller ones with longer tales "doves". Am I alone in just learning this? Let me know in the comments!

🪶 They're the only birds that can drink water without lifting their heads.

At Seedlings Books, we believe that the Bible tells real stories about things that really happened in real places, and we try to represent that in the illustrations. The Jericho scene from A Little Christian's 123s was SUCH a fun scene to put together, and I learned a lot while doing the research for it. Here are some things that helped inspired the illustration:
🟡 The wall was inspired by pictures from the Jericho excavation site.
🟡 The horns were inspired by real rams horns.
🟡 The blurry crowd in the background shows it was a BIG group of men circling the city.
🟡 The weapons were inspired by the weapons the army actually had.
🟡 The ark of the covenant is covered in a blue cloth.
Is it perfect? Nope. I am not an archeologist, historian, or Bible scholar. Plus, it's a children's book. I know there are short-fallings here and in any of our illustrations. BUT, I believe that the conscious effort and intention does yield a better result than winging it.
Plus, I know it's closer to the truth than a Jericho illustration of a castle-like wall, with people blowing trumpets, carrying an uncovered ark, and a small army with modern weapons. And I know we've all seen a Jericho illustration with at least a few of those elements. 😉
So I'll keep making the effort! Imperfect as the result may be, because, like I said, I'm no Biblical scholar. But I think if we can show our kids a version closer to what it ACTUALLY looked like, it helps to them to understand it ACTUALLY happened. And that has value. 😊

If you and your kiddos are traveling for the holidays, you need to pack and grab a copy of A Little Christian's 123s Coloring & Activity Book! This is such a great thing to slip into a carry on and entertain your littles on the flight. Younger ones can color that pictures, and olders will enjoy the mazes, word searches, number tracing, and more! Grab yours today if you haven't already.

I know in the grand scheme of things, sending out donated coloring and activity books to just six churches is not a big deal. But you know what? I have a 2 year old, a 1 year old, and 1 on the way. We've got a lot going on over here. So if I wait until I can contribute in "big deal" ways, I'm going to be waiting a long time. ⁠ 💛⁠ If you're waiting and looking to contribute in a "big" way, can I encourage you to look a little smaller? Something you can do now, that's maybe a small thing but with big love. Add a note to your kid's lunchbox. Make a favorite meal. Give a call to a friend.
