Our host Justine Evirs is moderating an event hosted by Minority Veterans of America tonight! Event info is in the description below. Feel free to share and show support!

TONIGHT, MAY 4, 2021 AT 7 PM EST!
Join MVA for a conversation with minority veteran leaders discussing your next mission in the nonprofit sector!
Register --> https://bit.ly/2PMOxrw

Many veterans leave the military and look to find their next mission or purpose through continuing to serve. For this reason, the nonprofit sector holds a lot of value and promise for minority veterans. The nonprofit industry can be difficult to break into and can present its own unique challenges for minority veterans. Join Minority Vets as we host a virtual panel, "Your Next Mission in the Nonprofit Sector".

Panelists include:
-Jeremy Butler, CEO, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (www.iava.org)
-Stephanie Gattas, CEO and Founder, The Pink Berets (www.thepinkberets.org/)
-BriGette McCoy, CEO, Women Veterans Social Justice Network (www.wvsjnetwork.org)
-Moderated by Justine Evirs, Founder and Host, Protecting Courage Podcast (protectingcouragepodcast.transistor.fm)

The conversation will include:
-Discussion of how folks found their way into their role(s) in the nonprofit sector
-Discussion of challenges and systemic barriers minority veterans face in transitioning to the nonprofit sector and how they overcame them
-Sharing of resources and insights into staying true to your values and goals while working in the nonprofit sector

This panel is part of a series of discussions hosted by Project Thrive, the Minority Vets economic empowerment program working to advance the career and economic interests of the minority veteran community.

External perceptions do not matter. If your decisions feel courageous, then they are. Don’t let anyone tell you that what feels courageous to you, is not valid.

I am in a season of my life where making the decision to get out of bed and go for a walk each morning is courageous to me. Other times in my life managing a global organization with a distributed team of 20+ people was courageous to me.

What is the courageous decision you are making today?

Tune into the Protecting Courage Podcast and here more about courageous decisions today.

"And then I just came to that awakening, that "eyes looking back at myself in the mirror" moment, when I said no, you have to own who you are. You basically preach. Episode Flashback #11 - The Holistic Approach to Healing with Krystal Ross

"I would ask you what your intention was, because I feel that it's all about intention and the energy behind the action. If it's physical fitness, is the intention to feel healthy and vibrant in your body, or does it is the intention to meet a certain standard or to show the world how fit you are? I think it's really important to get clear on "what is my intention here?"

I really shouldn't be surprised anymore that there are terms to describe specific feelings and experiences related to our mental health.

Weigh in - Do you struggle with Mental Resistance?

It starts like this: you feel stuck + want to change a behavior or create a new habit.

Typically, this is done when we are in feelings of shame. Shame can be a messenger that our patterns are causing us suffering.

And sometimes shame creates a space where we make big promises or commitments. I had a client who would have issues with binge drinking. The next morning she’d promise she’s “go to the gym, meditate, begin eating only home cooked meals, + she’d spend more time connecting to nature.” During emotional rock bottoms, we so desperately want to feel desperately we make big claims for ourselves.

This is when mental resistance is strongest. When we try to create too many new habits at once the mind + body start screaming “no.” Even with smaller habits like beginning journaling can create a ton of thoughts of procrastination + discomfort within the body.

Understanding mental resistance allows us to expect it. See it as a coping mechanism to keep us safe, then make SMALL choices to get past the mind every day.

Mental resistance is unavoidable. Our response to it allows our healing
