STL Media Group “From zero we started. From pressure we survive. From ashes we re-emerge for Freedom and independence, unfinished struggle”. Mr. Xanana Gusmao and Mr. III.

Dreams ahead are STL Media Group became one of the Industry of Information and lay down the foundation for Industry of Knowledge in this Country of the Rising SUN and recognized in the region. Background

The daily Suara Timor Lorosae or STL has been published since July 31st, 2000 as a rebirth of the daily Suara Timor Timur (STT). First edition of STT printed on February 1st , 1993 coincided wi

th the first day of the trial of Xanana Gusmao, the then resistance leader (later on President of the Republic and now the Prime Minister) in the court of Dili. The new name, Suara Timor Lorosae, specially the word LOROSAE has been chosen to replace Timur in order to emphasize the status and identity of East Timor as a nation and sovereign state . Due to the worsening of the security situation, than the last edition of STT was printed on September 3rd, 1999 one day before the announcement of the results of the popular consultation organized by the United Nations Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) in 30 August 1999. Following the announcement of the result of the popular consultation on 4th of September 1999, won by the pro-independence side, triggered the Indonesian military backed-militias to destroy, burn and rampage all of the assets of the newspaper Suara Timor Timur including houses, printing machines, production facilities. Consequently, the rebuilding of the newspaper has to be started from wreckages and for sure it is not an easy task to be done. Financial limitation is not a real impediment, since we believe on the popular saying, “where’s a will there’s a way”. So the important things are good intention, motivation and working hard, and there will be solutions and ways to solve the problems whatever the difficulties are. This has been evidenced from experience of publishing Suara Timor Timur since 1993. We are able and successful to re-establishing the newspaper, somehow, due to the supports given by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), USA, and the Netherlands Government through the Embassy in Jakarta which undoubtedly and immediately released funds that has been committed since July 1999 before the popular consultation taken place. It was important because at the same time there are efforts and campaign from some elements and institutions including UNESCO to oppose financial assistance to republish the newspaper. We are indeed expressing our appreciation and gratitude to the NED and the Netherlands´ Embassy in Jakarta. The way to republish STL became easier and came on an appropriate time when the old donors from New Zealand and Canadian Embassies in Jakarta gave a significant support to prepare grounds for the republication of the newspaper. The OTI / USAID´s office in Dili offer also its support to keep running the newspaper few months later following the republication. From 2001 up 2008 our big donor is Finland Government that provide fund for construction house two floor, equipments, and training journalist and staffs. Republication of the newspaper not only a matter of fund but it is also the trust and confidence from East Timorese leaders. Ramos Horta two key leaders of East Timorese independence, since in the beginning, no doubt and gave a strong political support for the republication of newspaper. Global Trend

As a pioneer of a free and independent media, challenges for the management of newspaper not only keep sustaining the daily but at the same time shall prepare ground and plan to realize the requirement of global media trend. Global media trend require converging print and electronic media under one management in the context to respond to the people’s need and requirement to obtain fastest, comprehensive, and easy information access. In that context, on the occasion of inauguration of STL print facilities by His Excellency Xanana Gusmao, than President of CNRT on April 7, 2002, management has announce that the STL dreams ahead is became again pioneer to converge print and electronic media. Yesterday dreams became reality now a days. Starting early 2008, according to the political and leadership changing in the government, STL management has prepared grounds to establish radio and television. Preparation such as application for Business Company, licence frequency for TV and radio and purchasing equipments has started. October 2008, an instalment of transmitter, training human resources and experimental program for TV and radio has begun.
