Friday, Aug. 20, 7 p.m.: Meet Monica Bhide
Equal parts storyteller and globe-trotter, Monica Bhide, an award-winning author, accomplished literary coach, and educator with over 15 years of experience, transcends countless borders—chronological, geographical, religious, and economical—to inspire her readers. Born in New Delhi, raised in the Middle East, and now residing outside Washington, D.C., she currently serves as a corporate storyteller for one of the world’s leading professional services companies. Her prolific portfolio, enriched by the many places she calls home, channels a distinctly cosmopolitan worldview.
Monica’s words, which have appeared on renowned platforms including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Christian Science Monitor, Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, and Town & Country, among others, are a collection of culture-driven articles that approach the world food first. Her books, all infused with a signature lyricism, consist of acclaimed cooking compendiums, like 2009’s Modern Spice, brimming with contemporary versions of traditional Indian recipes. Her debut short story collection, The Devil in Us, a clutch of spellbinding tales centered on fate and fortune, earned a spot on Amazon’s bestseller list in 2015, while her more recent novel, Karma and the Art of Butter Chicken, which explores the healing power of food, led NPR’s café in Washington, D.C., to serve up creations inspired by her protagonist chef.

New Zealand massacre: Journalists divided on how to cover hate

New Zealand massacre: Journalists divided on how to cover hate

Mass shootings have a way of making the theoretical talk about Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube and their role in spreading hate all too real. Thursday brought yet another horrific example of this depressingly frequent phenomenon, when a white supremacist shot and killed 49 people in a mosque in Chris...

UpFront

Freelance gig in Washington DC:
Al Jazeera's UpFront (https://www.aljazeera.com/programmes/upfront/), the weekly international affairs debate show hosted by award-winning British journalist Mehdi Hasan is looking for a researcher who will be based in our Washington, D.C. office.

Please note that this is a *freelance* position with an initial contract from September - December and an option to extend through to June 2019 (hours are generally 9:30-5:30). The person selected for this role will support the two producers as well as Mehdi for our weekly program. We are looking for someone with prior research experience and broad knowledge of international affairs.

Please note that this job *cannot* be done remotely.

If you are interested, please send Producer Elizabeth Walsh your CV and cover letter to [email protected]. We have already begun interviewing applicants and will continue to do so over the next several weeks.

With the thrust and parry of rigorous debate, Mehdi Hasan cuts through the headlines to challenge conventional wisdom, highlight contradictions and uncover double standards.

Copying and pasting this from a colleague's post:

The Muse is looking for freelance pitches! If you're interested in writing on career or work-related topics, please pitch me!

WHAT TO PITCH: Currently, we're looking for reported features, personal essays (that have takeaways or actionable advice), and experimental "I tried this" articles. In other words, we have a lot of lists and basic career advice on the site and we're looking for pitches that are different from what we already have. My goal is to bring more in-depth reporting and more great storytelling to the site.

Even though we're going beyond our day-to-day style, we're still interested in people who can capture The Muse voice (your fun friend who happens to know more about careers than you do) and spirit (realistic, yet optimistic).

HOW TO PITCH: If you have a specific pitch that you think would be a good fit for The Muse, send an email with the subject line "Freelance article idea: [a few words about your idea here]" to editor[at]themuse[dot]com. Please include your pitch, a couple lines about you, links to 2-3 published clips, and a link to your personal website and/or LinkedIn or Twitter profile.

HOW MUCH WE PAY: Rates will depend on the specific pitch, but we're paying $150 - $300 for most articles under 1,000 words right now.

QUESTIONS? If you have any questions, you can send a note to editor[at]themuse[dot]com with the subject line "Freelance question: [a few words about your question here]."

If you aren't already a SAJA member, we hope you'll become one this week and encourage others to join to support our work.
You don't have to be South Asian to join SAJA.
Student memberships cost just $20!

An anonymous donor has an incentive for us: if SAJA adds more than 25 members by Sept. 25, 2017, ALL members of SAJA will be entered into a raffle. The prize for the raffle? Ten times the number of new members we get!
That means if we sign up 25 new members, the raffle prize will be $250. If we sign up 30, the prize money goes up to $300, and so on. Get the idea?

So why become a SAJA member? Our Vice President Ankita Rao has these very compelling reasons for you:

The Network: This is the largest network of South Asian journalists in the country, which means invaluable access to thousands of people who are working to produce powerful work in many different companies and mediums.
The Support: SAJA offers scholarships and funding to journalists at all stages —students, interns, and professionals. As former and current journalists, we know what it takes thrive in this industry and we invest in our members to make sure that they do.
The Events: From meetups to our annual award ceremonies, SAJA organizes dozens of events every year to ensure that our community dialogue flourishes.
The Coverage: SAJA offers financial support, and professional resources, for journalists covering South Asia and the diaspora. Our SAJA Reporting Fellowship winners have traveled to far-flung places to bring back vibrant, crucial reportage that has impact.
The Change: While our industry has evolved since our inception, journalism is still in dire need of journalists from different backgrounds, with different worldviews and voices. SAJA helps represent and promote diversity in our newsrooms.
The Conversation: SAJA offers a place to go when there's a topic that needs to be discussed and covered, whether it's Islamophobia, an earthquake in Nepal, or a refugee crisis. The confluence of our members, expertise and resources make sure that stories transcend the community.
And if you have any trouble signing up, just email SAJA Secretary Zainab Imam at [email protected].
