MCOA Journal

MCOA Journal The MCOA Journal is a publication of the Mastiff Club of America, produced for its members, by its members. Featuring our dogs, articles and information.

The MCOA Journal is a bi-annual publication which provides a variety of information specific to the English Mastiff breed. A typical issue may contain articles about Mastiff health, Mastiff training, health research projects, etc. For the person who enjoys competing with their Mastiffs, there are useful member articles on conformation and obedience competitions. Twice a year the Mastiff Club of America puts out a publication called the MCOA Journal. The Journal features health and seasonal topics relevant to Mastiffs. For example, the upcoming issue's health subject is Pyometra and will also have articles with information on other important topics such as: heat exhaustion, moving an incapacitated Mastiff, and an introduction to traditional Chinese veterinary medicine.

Previous issues have covered topics such as: caring for you aging Mastiff, Cardiomyopathy, and Degenerative Myelopathy (BM).

The Journal is a wonderful resource and you don't need to be an MCOA member to subscribe...although we'd love to have you.

If you are a member, you can subscribe or renew your subscription when you renew your membership.

Photocopies of permanent certifications are not needed. All OTHER health testing claims, such as “OFA PRELIM,” “thyroid normal” (non-OFA), “vWD clear” and other “certifications” can only be made in Journal advertising if the advertiser sends a copy of the laboratory report (not a veterinarian’s letter of opinion) with the ad as proof. Generic statements about a particular dog’s certifications and reports, such as “he passed all genetic tests” without further clarification will not be allowed.

SHOW RANK CLAIMS: All claims of show rank on any Mastiff advertised in the MCOA Journal will be accompanied by the “as of” date of the ranking (such as “ #4 MCOA BOB (3rd qtr. ‘97),” due to the lag time between ranking, publishing and distribution. This must be submitted with the ad.

The use of the Mastiff Standard in advertising copy is prohibited. These policies extend to the MCOA Breeders Directory, published in the Journal. The Editor reserves the right to remove or make changes to any claim that is incorrect, illegible, does not meet these guidelines or cannot be verified in a timely fashion. All advertisements are subject to review by the Journal staff. HOWEVER, it is the overall responsibility of the ADVERTISER to make sure that all claims are true and accurate.

Just got word from our printer. All Journal subscriptions shipped yesterday and today (depending on whether you paid the extra for 1st class or regular bulk mail). Remember that bulk mail can take weeks to arrive, based on your zip code and the number of other bulk mail items going to that area, so please *try* to be patient!

Our printer verifies all addresses via the USPS's address verification system, and we get a report back for any addresses that come back as non-standard or not found. At this time, ALL subscriptions addresses are acceptable in the USPS system, so all magazines shipped without issue.

Watch your mailboxes! They are on their way!

Good news to start your weekend!

The newest issue of the MCOA Journal is uploaded to our printer! I'll get a proof to review, probably on Monday, and as long as everything looks good, it will go to print next week and start mailing soon after.

Thank you to everyone who subscribed! Our subscriptions are up over last year!!

The Journal Committee is looking for 3 new committee members. Specifically, two members who can write and proof articles, and one who is familiar with design programs such as InDesign and Photoshop and can design ads and help layout the magazine. Being on the committee can be very time intensive at certain times of the year, and we just don't have enough members with experience yet to lighten the load a little and spread the work around.

If you are an awesome writer or a great designer, please email our editor at [email protected]! We could use some fresh experience!!

Thank you to all who advertised in this issue! We hope to have some different opportunities for advertising in the future. Stay tuned! ;-)

And now, here's a preview of your next cover!

Someone found an error in the MCOA Journal and most of y'all don't even have it yet! We'll make it right, but just to let everyone know Janice Ackers' ad copy was NOT submitted by her originally with the statement that says Brody won BOB NOHS at the 2014 Eukanuba Show. Someone hit the delete and copy paste keys a few times too many on one of the revisions. Please take this as the honest mistake that it was and not let one sentence on one page of the 160 pages of the Journal doesn't overshadow the great work that the team did on the rest of the publication!

05/03/2015

The MCOA Journal has left the printer and should be arriving in mailboxes everywhere any moment now. We're so excited over its release, we've decided it's contest time! First person to share a picture of themselves with a copy of the New and Improved MCOA Journal in the comments below gets a 1/4 page ad or credit towards a larger ad in the next issue due this August.
