In this essay, Chantelle Gray talks about algorithmic governance - a new art of governing and government that treats individuals as data and the social world as a problem of big data sets - and the effects this is having on politics. Drawing on Tiqqun's The Cybernetic Hypothesis (2020), she thinks about anarchist responses to one of the most pressing issues of our time, namely how to prefigure social consistency in such a way that it produces conditions counter to algorithmic governmentality.

Chantelle Gray is an Associate Professor in Philosophy. Her most recent publications are "Fabulation in a Time of Algorithmic Ecology: Making the Future Possible" (with Aragorn Eloff) in Technology, Urban Space and the Networked Community (edited by Saswat Samay Das and Ananya Roy Pratihar) and Anarchism after Deleuze and Guattari: Fabulating Futures. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCrkUEIu_ks

Here are the flags rigged outside the National Press Club yesterday, adding colour other than red, white and blue to the crowd gathered there by the Freedom Convoy.
I am fascinated by this crowd phenomenon and am enjoying the people met there. They have come on impulse from all around Australia. Heard about it, said the inspired yes, packed the car and started driving, linking up along the way.
Arriving on Monday the first comers stormed to the Parliament, swept around barriers to the front doors and set up of a talking circle sitting of sorts on the tiles.
What i saw there was a bit ratty. A couple of folk with painfully tinny megaphones talking over each other to the police line, arguing even. It was a dispirit crowd in search of solidarity.
The Convoy arrivees also occupied the lawns of the Parliamentary Triangle and set up camps. There was a wonderful optimism and naivety about it. Excitement in the air, the good news of other groups coming from all directions.
The cops, overwhelmed on the Hill, let the campers stay over night and moved them the next day. "No vehicles or tents on the grass," they declared. Vehicles in the car parks must pay or be fined.
By that time a circle stick meeting had taken place and the Convoy crowd had agreed to make the Scomo address at the National Press Club their target.
An hour before the start time, Convoy vehicles were blocking the street outside the Press Club, and the drays of two trucks were being used as speaking platforms.
The crowd was feisty and funny. Larrikins running the show. Truck sirens sounding. Chants rising and falling.
People had their individual signage. Some had children and dogs.
To ease the mind of such as Wititj John Allan, bane of right wing influencers, I report that there was an Australia United Party placard holder present. But this brought him very little influence for he was challenged when it tied to speak.
Me, i don't try to speak. I prefer to listen to the strangers I meet on the crowd margins. Mums and dads radicalised by social media and mandates. Grandparents with campers on the loose.
Sunny dog was much admired, stroked and complimented. It was a very dog friendly crowd.
Grandpa friendly too. Sitting in the shade a three year old boy became attached to us. He took Sunny walking on her lead. He also took me to explore bugs in a garden bed near by.
The politicians delayed for an hour or so after the gig before they moved to make their escape. The ACT Police had rostered on every spare cop. The mobility of the Convoy Crowd had them spooked. But in the end the escape of the pollies was achieved with only minor argy bargy.
I saw a big man in white Akubra hat abandon his government car and driver and stride back through the crowd. Barnaby Joyce! What was he thinking? To court popularism? He was not recognised at first by the crowd and before it could move, the cops moved Barnaby on. What a disappointment.
The banners go down well with Freedom Rally folk. For them Julian is a free speech warrior, a leader is creating their present awareness of the vast depth of the government lies that they know now that they have been peddled.
Needless to say that if one wanted to be an influencer of this mob, one would fail attempting to buy influence over them on Tv and MMS. These in general are reviled. Social media is their source but it would be arrogance to suggest they are disinformed.
To the contrary, there is pride in their discernment.
Interesting times.
