Slavs and Slavery – Spotlight on Justyna Kisielewicz

Justyna Kisielewicz (b. 1983, Poland) paints complex narrative work informed by her upbringing in Poland, which seduces with images of abundance. However, one will find these are not ‘Disney-esque’ but rather political paintings, meant to educate and to visit history in the hopes of avoiding its repetition.

This dual presentation echoes her recollection, from age 7, of a grade-school field trip when she ended up, not at a museum, but touring a concentration camp.

Brilliance in Our Backyard: Rosie Herrera Awarded Inaugural Knight Choreography Prize

We’re so fortunate to have phenomenal artists in Miami, and sometimes we need to be reminded of the artistic rigor that exists in our backyards. Last week, Rosie Herrera, Miami choreographer and Artistic Director of the Rosie Herrera Dance Theater, became the inaugural recipient of the Knight Choreography Prize from the National Center for Choreography-Akron. This was just such a reminder.

Herrera’s approach to choreography provides exceptional insight and originality, setting new standards and raising the bar for future choreographers. The NCCAkron award, made possible by the Knight Foundation award serves as evidence of what many in her cohort already knew. “She’s a genius,” said Beth Boone, Executive Director of the Miami Light Project. She went on to say, “Like no other, she has captured and embodies a unique Miami aesthetic. Her work mirrors the wild juxtapositions of this place that we know as ‘the 305’. The on-stage worlds she creates are at once profound and whimsical, and magically reflect a place of extreme contrasts and frequent paradox.”

Photo Exhibition at the Kampong is a Significant Slice of Local Miami History

“A Lens on Community: Photographs by Klara Farkas and Georgette Ballance” is an exploration of humanity through the work of two remarkable South Florida photographers. The historically significant mother/daughter exhibition is currently on view at The Kampong in Coconut Grove, a location that reflects the intertwined relationships between histories both human and natural. Farkas (1910- 2014, Hungary) lived and worked in Coconut Grove for 70 years and passed just shy of her 104th birthday and Ballance, her daughter (1956, USA), continues to live in Miami.

Mostly Female Musicians in the Spotlight for Summer Concert Series in Coral Gables

For nearly 40 years, the Community Arts Program (CAP) has provided a cultural musical outlet during the slower summer months at Coral Gables Congregational Church.

At the helm of the program and growing it since 2002 is Mark Hart, CAP executive and artistic director, who this year proudly boasts CAP’s Summer Concert Series is made up of predominantly women performers. And, he says, that was his goal in planning this year’s series, which runs every other Thursday from June 13 through Aug. 22.

At the Frost Art Museum, Three Artists Make ‘Of What Surrounds Me’ Larger Than Life

When Mette Tommerup, one of three artists in the Patrica & Phillip Frost Art Museum-FIU’s summer exhibition, was creating her site-specific installation “Like the Body of a Flower,” she says she wanted the viewer to feel as if they were “walking through a field of wildflowers with lots and lots of colors.” The Danish-American artist, who works out of Coconut Grove and Little Havana, created four pieces that make up the installation, each named using a line from one of Pulitzer Prize winner Mary Oliver’s poems.

South Florida Symphony Joins Siudy Flamenco to Cast Spell of Spanish Gypsy Story

Sorcery of all sorts captures our imaginations. There’s witchcraft, with its errant rites for reward and retribution; love— at times seeming just as supernatural—casting its own spells; and art, relying on the wiles of truth and beauty to enchant the senses and possess the mind. Pick your potion or imbibe all, which are contained in “Amor Brujo.” This concert-dance piece embraces a classic of haunted passions among Spanish gypsies that Siudy Garrido Flamenco Company (SGFC) and South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO) are restaging at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, June 15.

New Heritage Trail Explores Opa-Locka’s Rich Culture and History

PAMM’s Newest Show Explores What It Means to Be Chicano – or Chicanx

The first thing visitors may wonder about “Xican-a.o.x. Body,” the Pérez Art Museum Miami’s latest art exhibition showcasing indigenous-descended Mexican-American art and artists, is how to say its title.

The answer, according to curator Gilbert Vicario, is however you want. The “X” at the beginning is pronounced like the English “ch” as in “cheese.” The letters at the end are gender-specific, “o” for males, “a” for females, and “x” for nonbinary people. So, depending on your preference, it can be “Chicano,” “Chicana,” or “Chican-ex Body.”

Review: ‘Laughs in Spanish’ at Gablestage Captures the Flavor of Miami

Although Miami native Alexis Scheer’s play, “Laughs in Spanish,” was born in Boston (she wrote it as her MFA playwrighting program thesis at Boston University), has played in Denver, Houston, and Milwaukee, seeing the show with a cast and a director who understand the nuances of Miami’s language and style, sets up a multi-layered playing field.

From London, a New Event Champions Female Artists in Miami

It may come as a surprise, but Miami’s art scene is remarkably friendly towards women. At all levels of the art world in Miami, women have found positions of influence and success, from collectors like Mera Rubell and the late Rosa de la Cruz, curators like Bonnie Clearwater of NSU Art Museum and Maritza Lacayo of the Pérez Art Museum Miami, and artists such as Jillian Mayer, Antonia Wright, Lynne Golob Gelfman, and countless others. Then again, maybe it’s not so surprising – Miami is the only major U.S. city founded by a woman, after all.

Review: ‘A Rock Sails By’ is a Soul-Searching Delight at Actors’ Playhouse

It was 92 degrees outside of the Miracle Theatre in Coral Gables on a recent Sunday afternoon but in the second-floor balcony theater, it was a cool dark night in the New Mexico desert as no-nonsense, non-believer astrophysicist Dr. Lynn Cummings (Laura Turnbull) waited for a “big nothing rock” to pass by an observatory.

New Executive Director Adam Ganuza Leads Rhythm Foundation to the Next Stage

The Miami Beach-based Rhythm Foundation, a major nonprofit presenter of arts and music in South Florida, has announced Adam Ganuza as its new executive director. He succeeds James Quinlan, a co-founder of the organization, who will remain a board member.

“It’s special. It feels like a full-circle moment,” says Ganuza. “It’s just starting to dawn on me. To be honest — and I’m going to try putting this without sounding really cheesy — it feels like something that I’ve been working towards for years without even knowing it.”

Hampton Art Lovers Presents “Under a Simple Tree: the Canopy Policy Project”

When the intensity of the pounding Miami sun becomes unbearable, the shade of a large tree can be an oasis of comfort–if there is a tree to be found in the neighborhood.

Beyond comfort, trees protect our air, contribute to our health, and act as historic markers in communities. The tree as protector and symbol for what keeps us rooted is the subject of a speaker series, community summit, and an art exhibit entitled, “Under a Simple Tree: The Canopy Policy Project,” presented by Hampton Art Lovers at Green Space Miami. The provocative series, a kind of meditation on the life-giving and community-building significance of trees, will also present solutions for increasing Miami-Dade’s dwindling tree canopy.

Sometimes, as the immortal Freud reportedly said, a cigar is just a cigar. Yet the sentiment isn’t true for cigar cutters, which, as revealed in the Wolfsonian exhibit “Smoke Signals: Cigar Cutters and Masculine Values” are a kaleidoscope into the West’s fin de siècle and early 20th century cultures.
