Review | Dialogues of Form and Meaning

By Paul Mehdi Rizvi

"In the process of visually decoding, and then developing an appreciation of Ujala Khan’s and M4HK’s works, we are reminded of V. N. Volosinov’s intricate theories in linguistics and poetics, where language serves not merely as a means of communication, but as a tool for shaping reality itself. Just as words hold the power to evoke, transform, and cultivate meaning, these contemporary artists wield their aesthetic practice to navigate the immaterial spaces of intention, subjectivity, and historical continuity. Their oeuvre is a highly productive exploration of the evolution of aesthetic purpose, and in many ways traces how artists in the 21st century situate themselves in dialogue with purely aesthetic concerns.

Historically, art’s value was often defined by its aesthetic attributes—beauty, composition, and mastery of form. However, as modernity progressed, a significant rupture occurred, with artists such as Marcel Duchamp and the movements of Dada, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism shifting the conversation from aesthetic beauty to conceptual intention. This radical recontextualization opened a new chapter where the ‘idea’ became as powerful as the ‘object,’ and the relationship between art and language became a defining feature of contemporary artistic practice."

Profile | Mark Making on Distinctive Surfaces

By Sousan Qadeer

"Custom-made tools are a crucial part of his artistic process. Not forgetting that they are the same devices employed to carry out mundane activities about construction work given the choice of material. Somehow the visuals they render are representational yet not fully so simultaneously. Some pieces resemble a child playing with a new set of crayons as they bear random markings on them, yet other artworks display carefully planned techniques."

Hope to see you Today Tuesday 10th Dec between 5-8 pm for the opening of “for Outcome / of Outcome” a project of curated by .m.naeem

Recent findings reveal that Neanderthals, the first humans with an appreciation of art, made engravings in a cave in La Roche-Cotard, France. This discovery highlights the timeless nature of artistic expression and its deep-rooted significance in human history. From the earliest cave drawings, humanity has used various mediums to express beliefs and intellectual concerns. Over time, intellectuals have constantly redefined basic elements and principles of art, seeking different answers to the same questions and often raising new ones to foster understanding. From drawing (mark making) a simple dot to creating lines, shapes, forms, and beyond is fundamental to artistic expression and has played a crucial role in developing written scripts and languages.

“for Outcome / of Outcome” the 225th exhibition at Sanat Initiative pays a homage to drawing as both a vital means of conceptual development and a profound art form in its own right and recognizes its diversity across various mediums and its capacity to inspire new ways of thinking. The 50 artists in this exhibition transcend conventional boundaries, investigate new paradigms of drawing, and foster deeper intellectual engagement with this timeless and versatile discipline. Through their creativity, the participating artists of “for Outocome / of Outcome” have explored innovative solutions and started a new discourse.

Ways of Existing
Curated by Emaan Mahmud

Visual and pop culture profoundly shape our interactions with both ourselves and the world around us. These omnipresent messages influence how we perceive ourselves, our values, and our behaviours, often blurring the lines between reality and representation. By delving into Baudrillard's concept of simulacra and simulation, we see how cultural artifacts create hyperrealities, making it challenging to distinguish between what is real and what is artificially constructed.

In this exhibition, pop culture and kitsch play a crucial role. They highlight how mass-produced items, ideas, ideologies, and iconic symbols influence our self-perception and societal norms. This engagement aligns with Merleau-Ponty's phenomenological assertion that perception is an active, embodied process. Viewers become participants in the ongoing narrative, assigning significance to these objects.

Through this show, I want the artists to unravel our deep connection with the material world and how it shapes our existence. Are we the ones crafting visual culture, or does this culture mold how we view ourselves and our surroundings? By considering our embodied experiences with the displayed objects, we explore the complex interplay between perception, materiality, and cultural influence in our daily lives. This examination is further enriched by Bourdieu's theory of habitus, which helps us understand how our social and cultural contexts shape our perceptions and actions.

To be able to think deeply about the intricate relationship between our core selves and the material world. How do these interactions influence our perception and, ultimately, our existence?

Profile | Niilofur Farrukh: A force to be reckoned with

By Maheen Aziz

Exclusive conversation with the CEO of Karachi Biennale Trust Niilofur Farrukh.

"Then, in walked Niilofur, exuding warmth and confidence. Her kurta shalwar paired with her signature bangles added a traditional elegance. With her calm demeanor, my pre-interview jitters melted away. This wouldn’t be an ordinary career Q&A but a deep dive into the person behind the CEO title—her pressures, triumphs, and vision."
