Another, July 24th, and I think about my high school teacher who ended up murdered.

Every year on this day, I think about my high school English teacher Rebecca Patterson-Bibart. I was in the first class she ever taught at El Camino High School in South San Francisco. She had fiery red hair and a baby face, blending in with the students. She moved to California from her home state of Pennsylvania as her fiancé attended college in California. As a punk freshman, I'd often give her a bad time, and point out the shades of red her neck and cheeks turned as she put me in my place.

At the end of freshman year, she shared her excitement about her summer wedding, planned for July 24th, 1993. It's a date that stuck with me.

I found a way to be in Ms. Patterson's class every year of high school, including Yearbook Class as a senior. It was the closest class we had to journalism. She's the teacher who wrote my college recommendation letter and she spoke at my Eagle Scout Ceremony.

After her husband graduated college, they returned to the east coast, where they started a family. Every Christmas, I made the mailing list with the family updates as their two kids grew.

When she later returned to California, she called me and a classmate to meet up. It was fun sharing a beer with someone we once called a teacher. In fact, Ms. Patterson had to leave early after drinking a bit too much on an empty stomach.

Christmas of 2010, something was different. For the first time in 14 years, her Christmas letter didn't show up.

A google search revealed why. Her marriage went south, and she wanted a divorce from the same man she was excited to marry my freshman year. Instead of allowing it, he savagely murdered her inside the family home, and left a note for their young children not to enter. He was a scientist and used chemicals to take his own life in a much less brutal fashion.

In a selfish act, that man stole a life, and left two children without both parents. And her parents, without a daughter. I wonder how those children are doing now as they enter adulthood.

As I get older, it's hard to imagine I've already lived a life four years longer than Ms. Patterson lived. If everything worked out, she would've been married 30 years today.

It didn't work out. Once again on this July 24th, I pause to remember Ms. Patterson.

That fire in Mariposa really exploded last night, but firefighters saved the community. Here's my 3d map showing where it burned.

A 3D tour I built shows where the fire is burning this afternoon, on July 4th. It also shows the flames distance from the populated area of Kelly Ridge and where we lost structures.

A lot of people are wondering what's on fire right now in Oroville. Using NASA heat signatures, I put this animation together. It also shows its distance to Kelly Ridge and a neighborhood where we lost homes.
