“…But like with all jobs, there were moments that I hated, moments I wanted to quit, and moments I felt in over my head. With a lot of my job focusing on customer service, I was burning out fast from dealing with ill-tempered customers and hot-headed clientele. Despite my deteriorating energy, I kept the job, holding on to that novelty from the months prior.” -Mack Keating

Over the past year, the situation regarding teachers has been quite clear in Malden Public Schools; there aren’t enough. Yet on Thursday, May 12th, according to the Superintendent's office, 63 employees, possibly more, were given non-renewal notices across the district. This figure is a little less than 10% of the entire workforce at Malden Public Schools. According to the Malden Educators Association, however, 105 educators were non-renewed.

Upon hearing the news, many students were surprised and angry; while nobody knew what teachers had been laid off for sure (and outside of the central office, there is no definitive list at the time of writing), a few names of teachers struck a nerve among the student body.

If you know Malden High School, then you will know for a fact that our teachers are so much more than educators. Our teachers are our friends, and the most trusted people we may ever meet. This is why it is especially important that we show them our appreciation not only during Teacher Appreciation Week last week, but all the time.

All throughout last week, Principal Mr. Mastrangelo has encouraged us to talk to our teachers, and show them just how much we appreciate them as our educators.

Prom is approaching for the Class of ‘22--one of the most notable events in one’s senior year of high school. So, what distinguishes Malden High from other schools?

The answer: the implementation of a boot camp for students to better prepare themselves both physically, in terms of makeup, and mentally, with regard to feeling confident and like their best selves.

As May 27th nears, Kayla Morello hopes that through hosting the Prom Makeup Bootcamp, they help students embrace their beauty and find their confidence. “I just love people knowing that they’re beautiful. They’re beautiful with or without makeup, but makeup enhances how beautiful you actually are. You should feel that.”

In, a final message to students needing guidance: “I’m really open to if anybody was like, ‘Mx, could you tell me how to do this?’ I would 100% do that: ‘Come down during lunch, I’m down during a study, and I’ll totally help you do that,’” Morello concluded.

The Academically Enriched and Advanced Program (AEAP), sometimes referred to as the “gifted” program, is a longstanding program at the Linden STEAM Academy in Malden. Students would take a placement test to be administered into the class, with the first slots opening in first grade and running up to eighth grade. At the beginning of the pandemic, the school committee made the executive decision to halt the application process for the program due to disparities between familial opportunities.

After seeing the Class of 2020 and 2021 lose so much of their high school experience, this year’s seniors thought they were in the clear. With a return to in-person learning and the lifting of the mask mandate, the Class of 2022 were thrilled to be back at Malden High School and ready to conquer their senior year.

As they worked diligently on their college applications with counselors and advisors, many had high hopes for where they would attend college in the fall. Unfortunately, no one could have predicted the astronomical rise in college applications and the consequent decrease in acceptance rates.

In a surprising development, the Malden High administration has decided to station monitors outside of the bathrooms on the third floor of Boyle house. This decision has garnered different reactions from students across the school.

Senior Armani Dure expressed his frustration, believing that “it is really unnecessary. I don't think this is really going to be a deterrent for people doing negative things within the school. It's honestly just a detriment to everyone who's doing the right thing.”

Looking back on previous seasons, advisor Richard Tivnan noted his pride in the team. “I got a little spoiled a couple of years ago. We went on a little run where we would go to the regional tournament every year; we would win all the preliminary trials and we made it to the final 16 in the state. That is always my goal, but where we are at now compared to where we were last year, I am thrilled with how it went, to win two out of three, especially against two private schools.”

Returning to full in-person school after a year of remote learning and half-year of hybrid education proved a difficult transition for students and staff alike. One of the main struggles among them was the increased use of cell phones during school hours.

To help with the transition, Malden High School administration created a new phone policy. Under it, students are barred from using their phones during class.

Senior Jasmine Luc (._.cakes) gave some perspective on what she thought about the situation, “I think that the policies are put in place because of the time spent being virtual. There’s such an issue with phones now because we were so used to being on our phones while being virtual, so now in class we have low attention spans and just want to be on our phones. I was a freshman before COVID happened, and I don’t remember it being such a problem.”

“‘I take my job personally. I love all my students, but at Malden High School, we're very lucky to still have the automotive program and it would be great to bring back a couple of other programs so we could get more kids involved,’ Bazzinotti explained, emphasizing the importance of hands-on classes.”

“Being a high school student two years later is certainly a new feeling. We grew up in a small building down the street, and now we are in a huge building with over 400 students in our grade. Yet, we will always be those same middle schoolers when we step back into that building because we never really got to say goodbye.”
