Mr. Sanborn had been dealing with prostate cancer since 2018, but had been able to maintain his normal schedule of concerts until just recently. Indeed he already had concerts scheduled into 2025.

On this date in 1990, at the 62nd Academy Awards, "Cinema Paradisio" (1989) was awarded the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

Told largely in flashback of a successful film director named Salvatore Di Vita to his childhood years, it also tells the story of the return to his native Sicilian village for the funeral of his old friend Alfredo, the projectionist at the local "Cinema Paradiso." Ultimately, Alfredo serves as a wise father figure to his young friend who only wishes to see him succeed, even if it means breaking his heart in the process.

Credited with revitalizing Italy's film industry, the film was shot in Bagheria, Sicily, director Giuseppe Tornatore's hometown. Tornatore largely drew on his childhood experiences there as inspiration for the film. His intention was that this movie should serve as an obituary for traditional movie theatres (like the one on the film) and the movie industry in general. After the movie's success he never mentioned this again.

Philippe Noiret, who played the role of Alfredo the projectionist, said all of his lines in French, his native language. He was later dubbed in Italian by Vittorio Di Prima. In the French version, Noiret dubbed himself.

In addition to winning the Oscar, the film also won the Cannes Film Festival's Grand Prix. It was nominated for 11 BAFTA Awards and won five; including Best Actor for Noiret, Best Supporting Actor for Salvatore Cascio (who played Salvatore as a child), Best Original Screenplay, and Best Foreign Language Film, a record for a foreign language feature until it was broken by "All Quiet on the Western Front" (2022) in 2023. On this date in 1958, at the 30th Academy Awards, "The Red Balloon" (1956) was named Best Original Screenplay (even though it has little dialogue). It is the only short film (35 minutes) to win the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

The film premiered and opened nationwide in France on 19 October 19, 1956; it was released in the United Kingdom on 23 December 23 1956 (as the supporting film to the 1956 film "The Battle of the River Plate," which ensured it a wide distribution) and in the United States on March 11, 1957. The film had its American network television premiere as a special episode of "General Electric Theater" on CBS in 1961. However, it was broadcast in black and white.

In addition, this film had one of the largest non-theatrical runs in the history of American cinema. Thousands of 16-millimeter prints were distributed to schools across the country.

The director, Albert Lamorrise, was also the inventor of the board game Risk in 1957. Lamorisse used his children as actors in the film. His son, Pascal, plays himself in the main role, and his daughter, Sabine, portrays a young girl.(Wikipedia/IMDb)
