The Fantasist The Fantasist is an online quarterly magazine that publishes fantasy novellas - Three the third Thursday of every third month. We also love novellas.

We’ve heard it said that a magazine is a network, but we prefer to think of it as a community, or a conversation, or at least that it should strive to be. We’re trying to broaden the definition of fantasy, to deepen and complicate the conversation around speculative fiction, and to expand the role of fantasy within that conversation. Toward that end, The Fantasist is an online quarterly magazine t

hat publishes fantasy novellas. Submissions are not yet open, but we hope to print three novellas the third Thursday of every third month, beginning in December of 2016. As long form fiction writers ourselves, we are aware that stories over 15,000 words do occur naturally in the wild. We love the freedom they offer to fully explore a world, or an idea, or a character, and to meander without detriment to other things.

Good news everyone! We still don't know what was wrong with our website, but it appears to have spontaneously resolved itself. All stories published at The Fantasist are once again available to read there.

The COVID-19 pandemic, and what I'm going to call substantial staffing changes have forced us to move slower, and think harder, as we transition the magazine into whatever it's going to be in the future, but we are still here, and we still appreciate everyone who hasn't lost faith in us.

‘These lens-shaped orographic wave clouds form when the air is stable and winds blow across hills and mountains from the same or similar direction at different heights through the troposphere.’

Lenticular Cloud Stats:
Height of base: 6,500 - 16,500 ft
Shape: Curved layers, like flying saucers
Latin: Altocumulus lenticularis = “like a lens”
Precipitation: None

How do lenticular clouds form?
‘When air blows across a mountain range, in certain circumstances, it can set up a train of large standing waves in the air downstream, rather like ripples forming in a river when water flows over an obstruction. If there is enough moisture in the air, the rising motion of the wave will cause water vapour to condense, forming the unique appearance of lenticular clouds.’

What weather is associated with lenticular clouds?
‘Lenticular clouds are a visible sign of mountain waves in the air. However, these waves can be present beyond the clouds, and may exist even when no clouds are formed. On the ground, they can result in very strong gusty winds in one place, with still air only a few hundred metres away. Pilots of powered aircraft tend to avoid flying near lenticular clouds because of the turbulence that accompany them. Skilled (and brave) glider pilots, on the other hand, like them, because they can tell from the shape of the clouds where the air will be rising.’

How do we categorise lenticular clouds?
‘There are three main types of lenticular clouds: altocumulus standing lenticular (ACSL), stratocumulus standing lenticular (SCSL), and cirrocumulus standing lenticular (CCSL), varying in altitude above the ground.’ J⭐️

Very pleased to see Issue 7 novella The Book of the Living by Isa Prospero mentioned by Maria Haskins. She writes,

"Scribes wielding divine powers, pyramids, powerful glyphs, the dead rising from their graves, tomb robbers, betrayal, dangerous secrets, and a loving couple, drawn into a breath-taking adventure. Yep, this is a real treat of a story. Nemet’s wife Hatshe learned to wield spells from her father at an early age, and since he was executed for treason, she has been looking for a way to clear his name and punish those who falsely accused him. But when the opportunity to find out what really happened to her father presents itself, things do not go the way she thought. This novella is brim-full with rich storytelling and satisfying world-building. It has a plot that draws you in right from the start, and vividly drawn characters that pop off the page."

Check out Isa's novella, and then check out the other stories Maria mentions at the link below.

ISSUE 7 NEWS: Due to some unexpected environmental issues at the Fantasist’s offices, Issue 7 was delayed. Some files were damaged, others lost. Everything’s under control now, but Issue 7 will be going live later than planned. Our hope and expectation is to take the issue live on July 19th, the third Thursday of this month. It was already our plan to move our publication schedule back one month, for various reasons. The plan was to do this after Issue 8 went live, but we will instead be doing it now. Issue 8 will go live on the third Thursday of October, Issue 9 the third Thursday of January, etc. We thank you all for your understanding and patience during this process.
