The NBA is an open book with media access, while the NBL is more controlled. Could an American style model benefit the NBL?

QUEENSLAND SET TO HOST
2020 CHEMIST WAREHOUSE WNBL SEASON

Basketball Australia today announced that through an innovative partnership with the Queensland Government, the 2020 Chemist Warehouse WNBL season will be contested entirely in a North Queensland hub later this year.

The Queensland Government’s support along with that of the Cairns Regional Council, Mackay Regional Council and the City of Townsville, will see Cairns, Mackay and Townsville host a revised season structure from November 12, where each team will contest 14 games as part of a 56-game regular season fixture, plus a four game final series (2 x semi-finals, preliminary final and grand final).

The revised season model will see all eight WNBL teams relocate to North Queensland to contest the 2020 season, which will be played over a condensed 6-week format with the Grand Final scheduled for Sunday 20 December.

On making the announcement, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said, “Major events are an important part of my Government’s strategy to continue rebuilding and growing our economy and to support local jobs."

“The tourism and events sectors throughout our state have done it tough this year.

“Major sporting events pump millions of dollars into local businesses. Securing the WNBL is a great win for the whole of North Queensland and a dream come true for basketball fans in the region.”

Tourism Minister Kate Jones said Queensland has proven how important events can be to the economic recovery of our state.

“Great local events like the recent Horn fight in Townsville - which was also secured by the government - generate millions of dollars for local businesses that have struggled throughout this pandemic,” the Minister said.

“Through our major boost to events funding, we’re working hard to secure more events like this to support tourism businesses to rebuild and recover faster.”

This announcement means the WNBL season will tip-off as originally planned, which signals the commencement of an exciting 3-years for Australian women’s basketball that includes the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics and in 2022, Australia hosting the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.

Basketball Australia CEO Jerril Rechter AM said that everyone connected with the league was excited and grateful to have the backing of the Queensland Government.

“The support from the Queensland Government ensures we are able to deliver the season in 2020, providing a stage for Australia’s best established and emerging talent to contest the 41st edition of Australia’s longest-running elite women’s sporting competition, the Chemist Warehouse WNBL.

“On behalf of Basketball Australia, the WNBL clubs, players, coaches, officials, members and fans, I would like to thank Premier Palaszczuk and Minister Kate Jones for their visionary support of women’s basketball in Australia.

“Basketball Australia has been working in partnership with the eight club owners via their participation and collaboration on the WNBL Commission since the beginning of the pandemic. We all agreed it was critical to deliver the season and ensure the league puts a much-needed smile on the face of our fans and members, maintains the growth of women’s basketball throughout Australia, and continues to inspire future generations of players, coaches and officials. All of this as basketball finds itself on the doorstep of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics where the Chemist Warehouse Australian Opals are eyeing glory again and, just twelve months later, the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup will be hosted by Sydney,” said Rechter.

Mackay Basketball Stadium will hold eight games, Cairns Pop-Up Arena will showcase 20 games, with a combined 32 games to be played at Townsville Stadium and Townsville Entertainment Centre, including the entire final series.

Athletes, coaches, officials and other required personnel associated with the league from areas identified as ‘hotspots’ will this month arrive in Brisbane and undertake the 14-day quarantine period before relocating to North Queensland. During the quarantine period, teams and referees will have controlled access to training facilities at Nissan Arena in Brisbane.

Basketball Australia Head of Women in Basketball Lauren Jackson AO paid tribute to league stakeholders, including Club General Managers for their hands-on involvement in working groups over recent months, as all parties sought solutions to deliver the 2020 Chemist Warehouse WNBL season against the challenges presented by COVID-19.

“The passion and commitment of all involved in the league and their unwavering love of Australian basketball are the core reasons why players, coaches, officials and club staff will be making significant sacrifices to ensure the 2020 Chemist Warehouse WNBL season is contested.

“The WNBL is one of the world’s best elite basketball leagues and we have such depth in talent within Australian women’s basketball. The 2020 season plays a pivotal role in preparing the Chemist Warehouse Australian Opals for two important global tournaments and I want to thank all parties for the selfless and big picture approach in wanting to ensure the season went ahead,” concluded Jackson.

The 2020 Chemist Warehouse WNBL season fixture, broadcast details and ticketing information will be announced later this month.

AUSTRALIAN BASKETBALL SUPERSTAR LIZ CAMBAGE RETURNS TO CHEMIST WAREHOUSE WNBL

Australian basketball superstar Liz Cambage will return to the Chemist Warehouse WNBL after signing with Southside Flyers for the 2020-21 season.

The three-time WNBA All-Star centre missed the current WNBA season with the Las Vegas Aces due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will return to playing in Australia for the first time in three years.

“I am really looking forward to playing for the Flyers in the WNBL this season. I know they had a great first year and I am keen to help the team go one better and win the Championship,” Cambage said when confirming her decision to join Southside Flyers.

“It will be great playing with a number of Opals teammates and of course our coach, Cheryl Chambers, who is an assistant coach with the Opals. Flyers captain Jenna O’Hea is one of my favourites, she is also the Opals captain, she is like my captain on and off the court,” Cambage added.

For Flyers coach Cheryl Chambers the addition of Cambage to the line-up is very exciting.

“Liz is a superstar of women’s basketball and we know what she will bring to the team on the court which is really exciting for us. She has a great attitude and will be great for the team, not only on the court, but also off the court and in the community. Her profile will be great for the Flyers and the WNBL,” Chambers said.

Returning to train at Dandenong will complete a full circle for Cambage who played her junior basketball at Dandenong before taking to the world stage. Her professional career started with the Dandenong Rangers in the WNBL in 2007 and has included six seasons in the WNBL, seasons in China and the WNBA. She has been an All-Star in every competition she has played since 2010.

Basketball Australia Head of Women in Basketball, Lauren Jackson AO, said the signing of Cambage for the forthcoming Chemist Warehouse WNBL season was a further boost for league, with the All-Star centre joining a long list of current Australian Opals turning out in season 2020-21.

“We are thrilled to welcome Liz back to the Chemist Warehouse WNBL. Liz is without question one of the world’s best basketballers and will be a draw card for the league both on and off the court.

“You look at the rosters of the eight WNBL clubs for the forthcoming season and they are chockfull of the best emerging and established Australian athletes, not only wanting to claim the WNBL title but selection in the Opals team for the Tokyo Olympics.

“The WNBL is the longest-running elite women’s sporting competition in Australia and renowned as one of the leading women’s basketball leagues in the world, and fans will see just why when the new season tips off,” concluded Jackson.

Cambage will join several of her teammates for some unofficial training, under strict COVID-19 protocols, at the Dandenong Stadium this week before official training commences in September.

“While the coronavirus interrupted my WNBA career, it has given me the opportunity to play in Australia. I have always enjoyed playing in the WNBL, it is one of the best competitions in the world and I hope to see more supporters get behind the Flyers this season,” Cambage said.

The Chemist Warehouse 2020-21 WNBL season signifies the start of an exciting two years for Australian women’s basketball with the delayed Tokyo Olympics scheduled for July 2021 and Sydney will host the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in late 2022.

BASKETBALL AUSTRALIA ANNOUNCES OPALS SQAD

Just a year out from the Tokyo Olympics, Basketball Australia has announced the Australian 2020 Senior National Women’s Chemist Warehouse Opals Squad.

Amongst the 23 named were 10 Victorian stars including Elizabeth Cambage, Alanna Smith and Ezi Magbegor.

The squad is full of depth and a strong breadth of talent, including veteran Opal stars and some young fresh faces.

Victorians Jaz Shelley and Maddison Rocci will be the new kids on the block, selected for their first time in the Australian Opals squad.

The two have asserted themselves as promising players in the last year with Rocci proving herself as a guard in the WNBL with the Canberra Capitals and Shelley showcasing her talents both nationally as Basketball Victoria’s Junior Female Athlete of the Year and in college with the University of Oregon.

With an uncertainty still surrounding the FIBA Qualification window from 8 November to 16 November 2020, the Opals squad is required to be well prepared. The Opals will continue expectantly through to September, when Basketball Australia will be advised about the status of the qualification events by FIBA.

Australian Opals Head Coach Sandy Brondello is excited to extend the squad out to some of the younger talent who have shown extensive potential.

“From November 2020 to end of 2021, we will embark on an intensive schedule in preparation for the Olympics, followed by Asia Cup and Qualifiers. With that in mind, we decided to extend our squad to 23 players” Brondello said.

“While the core group has remained the same, we are excited to include some of our talented younger players (Shyla Heal, Jaz Shelley, Maddie Rocci and Tiana Mangakahia) who have shown much improvement over the past few years and deserve their selection in this squad.”

Whilst this is a squad of 23, it will remain fluid and can be reduced and or increased should an athlete deliver outstanding performances during their competitive season as the Opals work to build their strongest side for the upcoming Olympics in 2021.

“While the Olympics postponement was disappointing but necessary, we are excited as a group to get back together in November and start the process of building our chemistry to become the best team possible for Tokyo and beyond” said Brondello.

All Coaches will continue to monitor and assess the elite performances of Australian athletes in professional leagues such as the Chemist Warehouse WNBL, the European Leagues, the WNBA and the Chinese Basketball Association.

BASKETBALL AUSTRALIA ROLLS OUT NEXT PHASE OF ITS
"WE BALL TOGETHER" PROGRAM TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY DURING COVID-19

As part of its continued efforts to support the nation's basketball community during the COVID-19 pandemic, Basketball Australia (BA) has announced a range of new initiatives under its "We Ball Together" program aimed at keeping over 1.1 million participants active, engaged and informed until the sport can safely resume normalcy.

"The Australian basketball community has an important role to play in helping contain COVID-19 to ensure basketball is fully back up and running across communities and the elite level as quickly and safely as possible," says Jerril Rechter AM, CEO of Basketball Australia.

"With COVID-19 keeping Australians from being able to enjoy the physical, mental and social benefits basketball can provide for so many months, Basketball Australia developed the 'We Ball Together' program to help safeguard the health and wellbeing of our players, coaches, administrators and volunteers in the lead up to and during the gradual return of the sport."

BA has launched a new emotive spot to excite and inspire Australians about the resumption of basketball on courts across the country and to ensure participants feel connected and confident in returning to the game.

To help bring its Return to Basketball Guidelines to life, BA has also created a series of educational videos featuring Australian Opals stars Liz Cambage, Maddie Garrick and Ezi Magbegor around safety protocols and procedures for equipment and facilities use, hygiene practices and physical distancing to minimise the risk of community transmission.

BA's Basketball Network team, in conjunction with official digital partner, Stack Sports, has launched a series of dedicated support articles on The Basketball Network Help pages to provide States & Territory Associations with step-by-step assistance with restarting and monitoring the safe return of community basketball as COVID-19 restrictions start to ease.

Providing administrators with the necessary resources to guide and implement informed decisions around the abandonment, rescheduling or restarting of their competitions will ensure adherence to government and Basketball Australia's Return to Basketball Guidelines and that players' stats, finals eligibility and competition structures are unaffected for the season.

The initiative expands on BA's centralised COVID-19 Info Hub on the BA website, which provides Australians with health and government updates on coronavirus, updates regarding the status of BA programs and mental health and support resources.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia, BA has implemented a range of initiatives to keep the community healthy, happy and connected while they waited to get back on the court.

To keep basketball spirits up, BA launched the HomeCourtChallenge competition, which saw thousands of basketball fans from across the world, including media personalities and athletes from basketball, the AFL, the AFLW and A-League, submit their best trick shot at home.

Total engagement with the HomeCourtChallenge initiative from the BA channel alone was 243,000 and the total organic reach of the competition was nearly 500,000, with above average Instagram engagement over the eight-week period. The compilation video of the best shots from the competition is the second most viewed BA video for 2020.

BA, in collaboration with Basketball Tasmania, produced a series of videos with fun drills and games that allowed the 30,000 plus 5 to 10-year-olds who belong to the Aussie Hoops program to keep practising their skills at home.

For older players of all abilities, BA shared an array of home training drills, tips and educational content and partnered with fitness products company PTP to provide free online exercise classes and fitness resources to ensure the community remained physically active.

"With restrictions easing, we believe these initiatives under the 'We Ball Together' program will allow our game to accelerate its recovery and ensure basketball continues to grow and forge new pathways and opportunities in this country post COVID-19," says Rechter.

OPALS ASK AUSTRALIA TO "RISE UP"

IN SUPPORT OF BLACK LIVES MATTER

It Is Time, Time For Change

Basketball Australia and the Australian women's national team, the Opals, are asking the basketball community and community at large to RISE UP in support of Black Lives Matter.

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD A 5-MINUTE VIDEO BY THE AUSTRALIA OPALS ASKING PEOPLE TO "RISE UP"

The Opals are asking all Australians to RISE UP with them in taking positive action to eradicate racism, discrimination, and injustice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and people of colour, by embracing the Opals' team values of Respect, Injustice, Standards, Equality, Unity, Peace.

RESPECT – The world can never be a better place until we show respect for ALL people regardless of the colour of their skin, sexuality, religion, and culture.

INJUSTICE – Social injustice and systemic racism is WRONG. We need to educate ourselves more on black history and other minorities. We need to listen, walk in other shoes, sacrifice and support change. Sport brings us together regardless of our background - so we need to help make the change. Let us take action to help make the world a better place.

STANDARDS – Empathy, compassion, kindness, understanding, support, and love is always the better solution than hatred, violence, ignorance, and arrogance. We expect this of ourselves, family, and friends but now we need to go one step further and speak out against racism whenever we see it happen in front of us.

EQUALITY – The only way forward is with Equality. We all deserve the best of what this life can give us and being able to be who we were meant to be. Treat people how you would want to be treated and choose LOVE over HATE always.

UNITY – Just as we are a TEAM on the court, we are a TEAM off of it. There is more love, adaptability when we come together and work together to make change. Let us use our platform to make the change so that Black Lives Matter.

PEACE – Respect, justice, standards, equality, and unity will all lead to PEACE and PROSPERITY for all! However many obstacles we will face and regardless of how slow the change will be, stay the course and let us do our part to change the World!

For decades, Australian basketball – from grassroots to the elite level – has been enriched by people of colour, and Basketball Australia is joining with the Opals in wanting to build a more tolerant and just society through this RISE UP campaign.

"The extremely important Black Lives Matter movement has made it abundantly clear that as a global community we must work harder to bring an end to racism, discrimination and injustice," said Basketball Australia CEO Jerril Rechter AM.

"Basketball Australia is committed to using our position and platform to engage, listen, speak out, and be a vehicle for change on racial equality.

"We are extremely proud of the Australian Opals in wanting to come together and lend their voice and influence to not only support Black Lives Matters but drive positive change through their RISE UP campaign," concluded Rechter.

Currently ranked number two in the latest FIBA World Rankings, the Australian Opals have consistently been one of the country's most successful sporting teams over recent decades.

The Opals' playing group, based around the world, have come together in stating that it is time to make a difference and that Black Lives Matter.

"The Australian Opals' playing group are asking all Australians to RISE UP and stand with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and people of colour to make a change," said Australian Opals captain Jenna O'Hea.

"Racism, discrimination and injustice experienced by black communities is not an American problem, it is a worldwide issue including here in Australia.

"It is important that everyone learns and educates themselves on these matters because learning about racism is much easier than living and experiencing it on a daily basis.

"The Australian Opals are asking everyone to embrace our RISE UP team values of Respect, Injustice, Standards, Equality, Unity and Peace as we work together to eradicate racism, discrimination, and injustice both here at home and abroad," concluded O'Hea.

The Australian Opals RISE UP initiative will be rolled out by Basketball Australia over the coming months, starting with an impactful social and digital media campaign.
