An impromptu interview with my friend Sly

Most 501c3 organizations are created to address and or assist with various causes. Not all causes are officially organized. Some are simply people doing what they feel are good behavior and the right thing to do. One of my neighbors has been picking up litter in the early morning hours for years. Currently he's walking with the use of a cane. Thanks to him and good neighbors who do such.

Its Sunday. Im driving up Broad River Road in Columbia, S.C. and I wonder...how close to Broad River can I get by way of the side streets? Just my luck....I turn on Ohmarest Drive, Ohmarest goes from paved to gravel, turns left and runs parallel to the river and its a pleasant drive winding down this tree lined, scenic road that leads me to.....just my luck.....The Columbia Rowing Club. Id seen the long skinny boats in movies and on TV. Id seen them down on the Broad River as I crossed the bridge on Interstate 20. A year or so prior, I'd met a rowing team that had driven down from a college in New England. They'd stopped for breakfast and I asked about thier boats I'd seen in the parking lot. I've since learned that rowing teams have visited for winter training from Rhode Island, Georgetown, Vassar and Michigan Vanderbilt and that the Columbia Rowing Club has an open invitation online that lists the qualities and features of the Broad River. The club's website is www.Columbiarowingclub.com and there you will find an open invitation to you. That's right! C.R.C. Wants you to come down to the river, get in a long skinny boat with some soon to be friends and work up a sweat. And I ask....why would you want to get fresh air, exercise and enjoy a view from the surface of the Broad River when you could be sitting in a chair, snacking and gaining weight while watching TV? In other words, I encourage you to wander down Broad River Road, turn onto Ohmarest and follow the gravel road through the trees by the river to the Columbia Rowing Club and squeeze your hindside into a skinny boat. As for me....Im a joiner on this one. Join me now! Me: Row, row, row your boat! You: Row, row, row your boat! Read all about it on thier website.

Columbia Rowing Club was founded in 1998 by Masters rowers (everyone above 21 years) who wanted to row as a club and advance the sport of rowing in the midlands of South Carolina. CRC has a Youth Rowing program and hosts the USC Crew in addition to a recreational and competitive Masters rowing group...

WoodsTalk was originally the name of a show we were going to record in the woods near the Elmwood cemetary where my friend Mark lived. Since we couldn't afford a studio, a couple of chairs and a desk positioned in the woods in accordance with available sunlight and recorded with one or two phones was the plan. I presented the idea in jest to my then partners Mark and James. We were working on our newspaper called Loaves and Fishes. We quickly discovered that newspapers are very time consuming and a lot of work. Mark moved to Austin Texas and James evaporated leaving only me. I'm the idea guy of the project, with a tendency to work, rework, invent and reinvent projects which leaves little time for actual progress. In effort to get going....its only been a couple of years....I've decided to do something. So.....here goes something. Impromptu chats in search of direction which I hope will develope....possibly against my will, sort of divinely inspired or not.

Home Works of America. I first became aware of Home Works of America when I was hired to transport Columbia, South Carolina Mayor, Stephen Benjamin, various other elected officials and members of the media to tour and view homes of persons soon to receive services of the folks at Home Works. I tagged along with the fifteen or so invited guests, moving in a line, onto the porch, across the threshold and into the homes of mostly elderly, both black and white. In every case their financial situation was such that their home repair needs were beyond their possibilities to resolve. Folks on pensions, fixed incomes and or little or no incomes at all who were living in houses that weather, wear and time had taken a toal and had become nearly uninhabitable. Roofing seemed to be the most common problem. Rain coming through and into the house had caused a ceiling to fall with resulting mildew and mold. These homes had become health hazards. I saw that in several cases. Wear from time and use had doors and windows in disrepair. Kitchens and bathrooms were long past needing attention and not just cosmetic updates. What stayed with me more than anything else was being introduced to the residents. The home owners in most cases were widows and or elderly who in at least one case had a disabled family member who also lived there. Pictures of family on the walls, an old piano, mementos and usually a pet. I was in someone's home and it was personal. The home owner was introduced with a brief run down of circumstance and the neccessary repairs to be done by Home Works was pointed out and described. Most of the work is done by volunteers who tear out what cannot be fixed, paint, nail, carpet and work to make someone's home livable and in many cases, literally save the home. HOME SWEET HOME? It is once again thanks to the folks at Home works of America. In closing, to learn more, to volunteer and or to donate, Google...Home Works of America or call 803-781-4536

Remembering John Fling. John Fling was one of my neighbors. His home was on River Drive in Earlewood, around the corner from my own home and I must say, I was pleased to have him for a neighbor. A man that I greatly admired and still find him to be an inspiration. A seemingly down to earth, everyday man but was he? Not everyone can give their heart and their lives to help others. He was quoted as having said "my mission in life is to make the lives of others easier". That is what he did. He was from a family of nineteen children, a very poor family. I would have to think that being one of nineteen kids would have helped to make him who he was. He'd worked for the State Newspaper in Columbia South Carolina for many years and later, worked for Love Chevrolet until retiring to work for his fellow man. Love Chevrolet donated pick up trucks that he used to transport folks to doctors appointments, to church, to deliver food or to do whatever he felt needed to be done. I remember seeing him going down the street in his "donkey". The side of his truck said John Fling Ministries and also said, " My Donkey". John wore a cap that said, "I love to tell the story". For forty years he operated the John Fling Ministries which is a story that I and his neighbors, love to tell. I should mention Jane Fling, Johns wife of sixty one years who passed away a few years back. She would have had to have been a saint to be married to a saint like John. John laid his burden down in 2007. The gravestones of John and Jane are in Saint Peters Cemetery on Elmwood Avenue. I said that John was down to earth bit there's no doubt that he is now up in heaven. Saint Peters Cemetery is just a few blocks from my office. Think I'll walk down there and say thanks, were thinking of you. P.S. Google John Fling and read more.

This project has been bouncing around in my head for some time and I've been uncertain as to how to get started. I've decided to just get busy doing SOMETHING in hopes that the road map will reveal itself. I will begin posting stories, information, videos and ideas until I'm blinded by the light while here on the road. IF....you are expecting literary genius....you're in the wrong place. My first piece will be about one of my neighbors. His name....John Fling.
