Charlton Police Investigate Armed Robbery

Shortly after 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, the Charlton Police Department received a report of an armed robbery in progress at the Country Bank for Savings, 37 Worcester Road in the Town of Charlton. Members of the Charlton Police Department responded to the area and began an investigation into the report.

Witnesses reported that the suspect was a white male who fled on foot from the bank and was operating a white pickup truck, travelling on Stafford Street towards Route 20. Numerous police officers responded to the area, with the provided description, including officers who were working private duty traffic details on Route 20 in the immediate area. One of the officers responding from a private duty detail, in close proximity to the incident, observed a white pickup truck cross the intersection of Route 20 and Stafford Street. The vehicle, a white Ford pickup truck, with tan colored lower panels, operated by male matching the description of the suspect, traveled up Carpenter Hill Road.

The suspect vehicle was observed in the Prindle Hill Road/Burlingame Road area by residents and police officers. As the suspect vehicle approached the intersection of Main Street and Burlingame Road, an officer assigned as a school resource officer, operating a fully marked police cruiser, activated his lights and siren, after which he observed the vehicle accelerate through a stop sign, across the lawn of a church and a private residence, turning onto Mugget Hill Road. The vehicle travelled a significant distance, at high speed, on Mugget Hill Road, before coming to a stop, where the operator was taken into custody by multiple Charlton police officers.

The subsequent investigation, witness statements, and video images resulted in the operator of the white pick-up truck being positively identified as the individual responsible for the bank robbery. Following the issuance of a search warrant, a search of the white pick-up was conducted, where the clothing, mask, and money from the bank robbery were located inside the vehicle.

The suspect identified as Jason P. Curving, 50, of Sutton was held on $50,000.00 bail and arraigned on August 31, 2023, in the Dudley District Court on the following charges: armed robbery, armed robbery while masked, stealing by confining or putting in fear, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop for police, failure to identify to police, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, and several other motor vehicle charges. Following. Mr. Curving’s arraignment, he was held without bail at the Worcester County House of Correction, pending a dangerousness hearing.

At this time, the matter remains under investigation and may result in additional charges.

About Us

The Citizen Chronicle is a website dedicated to sourcing local news items from and for citizens of the southern Worcester county area.

The famed circus showman P.T. Barnum once said, “He who is without a newspaper is cut off from his species.”

Well, here in Southern Worcester County, many of us feel cut off.

To be fair, there are some newspapers in the area. There’s the big daily out of Worcester, but the coverage of those Southern Worcester County towns outside of the city get scant coverage. Southbridge once had a daily newspaper, but it has devolved into a weekly newspaper, along with a series of sister weeklies in Auburn, Charlton, Sturbridge, Webster, and elsewhere.
