REPORT: University presidentiables present proposed goals, vow to strengthen province’s maximum potential

In line with the upcoming university presidential elections, Bataan Peninsula State University (BPSU) hosted a Presidential Candidate Public Presentation held at the BPSU Main Campus Sari-Gamit Covered Court on March 31, 2023.

Vying for the position, Dr. Reynold A. Campo, Dr. Hermogenes M. Paguia, Dr. Emmanuel C. Macaraeg, and Dr. Ruby Santos-Matibag each took the stage to present their proposed mission, vision, and goals for the succeeding term of the university in front of university stakeholders including the board of regent representatives, Search Committee for President (SCP) members, university teaching and non-teaching staff, alumni, and student leaders.

Alongside their individual plans to enhance BPSU’s academic, social and welfare initiatives, and research programs, the candidates shared a common vision for the university’s internationalization through research, extensions, and income generating projects by strengthening the advantage of the province’s agricultural landscape.

Following the presentations, the board of regent representatives and the public forum attendees posed questions regarding the candidates’ plan about several topics, including their proposed response to flexible learning demands and collaborating with local government units on development strategies.

Thereof, answers from the presidential aspirants were centered on increasing ties with government and non-government linkages, and developing the university's brand as an institution of excellence.

Known for his infrastructural development projects for the university, outgoing University President Gregorio J. Rodis posed a challenge to the presidentiables who faced the public on the open forum, citing the competency of his legacy from his eight year-long administration.

“For the last eight years, I have been the best president and I do expect that the next president will be better than us. We are expecting that the next will be better from what we have done and so the best is yet to come,” Rodis stated.

After the public event, presidential candidates proceeded to attend a closed panel interview with the panelist from the SCP wherein panel members will evaluate each candidate based on their qualifications, experience, and vision for the university.

The result of the evaluation will be presented to the Board of Regents, who will be choosing the succeeding BPSU president among the candidates. SCP’s criteria for evaluation include the aspirants’ performance on the public presentation, which makes up 25 percent of the total score. Additionally, the closed panel interview, which makes up 15 percent of the criteria, will also be taken into consideration by the committee.

Meanwhile, prior to the public presentation and forum, Dr. Teody C. San Andres withdrew his application for candidacy.
