A group that included a well-known white nationalist carried torches and chanted “you will not replace us” at a weekend protest in Virginia over plans to remove a monument of a Confederate general.

The protesters on Saturday evening called on officials to halt the removal of a Gen. Robert E. Lee statue in Charlottesville and were swiftly condemned by the city’s mayor, who said the event appeared to hearken “back to the days of the K*K."

Recently pardoned by Virginia's governor, one of the ex-sailors known as the "Norfolk Four" says he hopes the healing can begin after he was finally cleared in the 20-year-old case of a woman who was r***d and murdered. Eric Wilson says police bullied him into falsely confessing to the r**e of the 18-year-old woman found stabbed and strangled in a Norfolk, Virginia, apartment in 1997. Wilson says he still has nightmares about the interrogation that led to the false confession.

Virginia's governor pardoned four former sailors who became known as the "Norfolk Four," ending a decades-long fight to clear the men of r**e and murder convictions based on intimidating police interrogations.

A spokesman for Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the governor granted absolute pardons for the men in the 1997 r**e and killing of Michelle Moore-Bosko.
