After all the valiant efforts that came up just shy, Sayville girls volleyball has finally captured its “big fish.”

The previous two years, Sayville coach Debra Urso and her teams had made it all the way to the Class A Long Island championship match, only to fall short.

This time, the Golden Flashes brought home their desired trophy as they defeated South Side in four sets to become Long Island champions for the first time ever.

The trivial math of a sports dynasty is often awe-inspiring. Take this one as an example: Port Jefferson girls volleyball did not lose a set this year.

The Royals have swept all 18 of their matches so far this year, giving them 54 consecutive set victories. The most recent three victorious sets coming against Carle Place 25-15, 25-8, 25-8 to win the Class C Long Island championship for the third year in a row.

Smithtown fell just three-tenths of a point short of a Suffolk League I gymnastics title this fall, losing its only meet to undefeated Middle Country.

Last fall, Smithtown barely missed its chance to win a third straight county title, finishing as the runner-up to Middle Country by 0.975 points.

Finding itself in another tight competition in the Suffolk team championship, Smithtown prevailed. The Bulls posted a season-high 179.575 points to claim their third county title in the last four years, narrowly outscored second-place Middle Country (178.625).

It took less than a minute for Comsewogue’s Jacob Deja to prove the Suffolk Class AA boys soccer championship wasn’t too big of a moment for a sophomore.

Deja forced a turnover before firing in the opening goal just 13 seconds in to give No. 9 Comsewogue a lead it would never relinquish as it claimed its first county title since 2009 with a 2-0 win over No. 11 West Islip. Comsewogue became the lowest-seeded champion in the 20-year existence of Suffolk AA.
