She beat cancer and is now backstopping one of Suffolk's top soccer teams
Maeve Gayer, a junior goalkeeper for the Eastport-South Manor girls soccer team, went to the doctor after suffering the injury during a basketball game in the eighth grade.
In a follow-up visit, the doctor noticed something unusual on Gayer’s neck.
The diagnosis was papillary thyroid cancer, and Gayer underwent a second surgery to remove the rest of her thyroid.
Gayer has been cancer-free since her January surgery and is focusing on enjoying life and the sport she loves.

After missing a quality scoring chance earlier in the game, junior midfielder Isabella Grosso wasn’t going to allow that to happen again.

In this year’s game, Lara Glasser came around the corner for a last-second sack of Hills quarterback Samantha Heyman. The junior middle linebacker lifted the flag in the air and jumped in jubilation as her teammates flooded her to conclude a 20-19 Hawks victory in the Long Island Class A championship.

A few years ago, Aaron Hubbard occasionally used a wheelchair to get around easier. After undergoing 14 surgeries at Stony Brook University Hospital, few would have expected Hubbard to be on a varsity basketball team, let alone score.
But that was always the sophomore’s plan when he scored his first high school points at Greenport’s loss to Smithtown Christian.

Half Hollow Hills West junior quarterback Joseph Filardi accounted for 10 touchdowns and 651 all-purpose yards in a wild 70-68 comeback win over Smithtown West in a Suffolk Division III quarterfinal game.
Filardi completed 30 of 38 passes for 404 yards and seven touchdowns and rushed 17 times for 183 yards and three more scores.

Patty O’Connor said she didn’t think of herself as a crusader for women’s rights in the 1980s, just a teenage student who wanted to start a girls lacrosse team at Bethpage High School.
When the school athletic director and school board shot down the idea, O’Connor, who would go on to work for the FBI, said she kept pushing in a campaign that lasted more than a year.
Now, that groundbreaking 1985 girls team has been inducted into the Bethpage High School Hall of Fame.
