Where the Land Lives

A family’s mission to plant endemic plants and trees, including the mighty koa, in an effort to restore and revive a native Hawaiian forest. The short-video is an intimate portrait of a local couple navigating the pit-falls of undertaking a reforestation project and how, regardless of the struggles, their passion for the ‘āina overcomes all obstacles.

Images and words by Andrew Agcaoili | A lot of firsts were happening back in 2015. We were working on our film 'Step Out'. It was my first time filming slackliners on highlines and it was a real eye opening project for me. I met a lot of rad humans the few days we were out on this shoot. One of them was Jesse Smalling. And yes, you'll probably find him without a shirt somewhere on the Big Island.⠀
⠀
A few hours after establishing the line everyone was starting to get comfortable on it. Jesse was on the sideline the entire day just watching. But then out of no where he gets up, throws on his painted green jeans and starts harnessing up. Doesn't say anything to anyone. He's lowering himself down to the line and sits for just a moment. Takes a deep breath and he's up in full send mode. Next thing you know he's on the other end with the biggest smile on his face. "That was my first time" says Jesse while pulling himself off the end of the line. It was real, raw and just beautiful.⠀
⠀
Fast forward 5 years to now and Jesse is still sending it today. Out on the line and with us on the Shibby team.⠀
⠀
Swipe for the raw clips of Jesse on the line and check out the full film 'Step Out' - link in bio.

Photos and story by Andrew Agcaoili

Trail running is a favorite pastime of mine. After a pretty serious ankle injury about 10 years ago it's never been the same. I've been prone to rolling it and learned to deal with the pain. But it couldn't keep me off the trails and I found other ways to spend time in the mountains. One of them was to photograph other trail runners. It's a different perspective sitting on the sidelines and somewhat enjoyable to watch the suffer fest happening in front of you. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
So here comes .run.fly. She's one of those badasses that can push it to the wall, knock it down and keep on going. One project we worked on together a couple years ago, she completed a night trail run (20+ miles), ran the Honolulu Marathon (26 miles) the next morning and then right after, met up with me and we ran her another few hours until the sun went down. She did all that in 48 hours with nothing but a smile on her face. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
These photos are from our last trail together in Hawaii before she left to her new home in Montana. Always good times starting/ending in the dark, getting dirty and sweating it out with her.

There's two ways to get to Kaʻena Point, you can either approach it from the north or the south of the island. Either way it's probably going to be a scorcher unless the rain gods hear your call. For those that do make it out there you'll be rewarded with a landscape unlike anywhere else on the island. Native plants and wildlife cover the point while the sunsets melt into the ocean. Makes walking back in the dark not so bad after. | Photo by Andrew Agcaoili⠀

Being given an exclusive look at the conservation work being done in the remote interior of Kaua‘i with The Nature Conservancy of Hawaiʻi was a true privilege. Filming it? A true challenge. Executing a shoot in one of the world’s wettest locations presents notable obstacles, particularly humidity which can wreak havoc on filming equipment. But what better way to understand fresh water security for the island than to visit the source itself ☔

Walking the line is no easy task. Adding more distractions like waterfalls, a person above/below you, and a drone carrying 20lbs of camera gear doesn't make it any easier. Thanks J. Lambus Photography and Greg Chavdarian for always going big for us. Jesse Smalling SlackHi
