Erasure is the tool of the oppressor.

The tool has been used in government policies to remove children from their mothers, it has been used in the teaching of history, art, and literature, it has been used for urban planning and countless other ways one group claims superiority over another when physical violence is not used.

It is no surprise then, in the beginning of a revolution calling for equality and justice, that the powers that be used a simple mechanism we are all so familiar to lull some of us into a space of supposed comfort and action.

All that has been achieved is the activation of the algorithm of erasure.

It appears that some need permission to act to do the right thing. Adding a blank tile with a hashtag is not the thing this moment requires of us/you/me.

If you posted a black tile this week, here’s your permission to delete it now and do better.

Do the needful.

Hashtags. Quotes. Muted Grids. All are irrelevant when it’s life or death for you or your loved ones. All it does is erase a reality that isn’t yours.⁣

If you’re not directly impacted by systems of oppression and police brutality is not part of your lived experience now is the time to dig deep, do your own research, listen, and never stop doing the work that is called for to be anti-racist. ⁣⁣

Listen to Black and Indigenous women, men, non-binary, trans, elders, and the young. ⁣⁣

Support Black and Indigenous owned businesses everyday, tomorrow, next year. ⁣⁣

Donate, volunteer, support organisations directly working with Black and Indigenous communities, especially those focused on supporting the education of young people. ⁣⁣

Read, share, discuss original content by Black and Indigenous writers, artists, and creatives. ⁣⁣

Most importantly listen in solidarity. These voices have always been here, loud and clear. Make space for them in your life every day. ⁣⁣

Culturally Diverse Creative Sector Workers and Artists
LOST WORK SURVEY

Thank you for the incredible response to our survey. If you haven’t already completed it, please take 5 minutes to do so. We will be publishing the preliminary results online from tomorrow and updating them regularly. We will also be reporting these results to arts and government bodies, and using them to lobby for assistance to creative sector workers.

We’ve been contacted by creatives and artists of colour about xenophobia and racism as a result of the reporting of COVID19. You can also include these experiences in the survey or message / email us if you prefer:

http://diversityarts.org.au/advocate-lost-work-artists-creatives-colour/

An apology. Shortly after we published this survey, it was brought to our attention that people could not tick multiple categories for some questions. We immediately rectified this. Please accept our apologies.

Always was, always will be. ⁣

Australia has the wonder of being home to one of the world’s oldest living culture. One who’s people have faced genocide and where systemic discrimination is still an every day reality. We need a time every year that acknowledges and respects the past and celebrates the contributions of Indigenous Australians. ⁣

Australia, we need to be accountable and respect our elders.

Hello from Nuwara Eliya! 👋🏾⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I had the pleasure of visiting the AMMA Workshop in the dreamy location of Nuwara Eliya or ‘up country’ as known by those of us familiar with the area.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
AMMA is a social enterprise focused on creating plant based hand-dyed and crafted textiles made by mothers and women living in Sri Lanka‘s area estates. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The workshop is a beam of light, filled with the heady aroma of Ayurvedic plants and a bustle of a dedicated team who hand dye and sew beautiful products for you and your home. ⁣When I arrived just before lunch, the team were working with locally foraged eucalyptus and madder root for a fabric order. ⁣⁣

The philosophy of AMMA is multi-fold; to create employment opportunities for young women and mothers in the area, foster mutual collaboration, create low-impact hand crafted goods that is gentle to the environment, and pay homage to the art of textile design and hand-woven textiles. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Take a scroll through their workshop which is co-led by AMMA’s founder Josie, Workshop Manager Meena, and Office Manager Dilukshi. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
You can find out more about their work over st AMMA Sri Lanka 🧡

What are you going to do this week to turn those ideas into something mighty and bright for your community? ⁣
———-⁣
It was in April last year when I found myself in Colombo, dreaming and planning to finally launch - an idea I had been tinkering with for a long time. I had wrapped up a few interviews and had a vision of how sharing our stories would create an opportunity for a mentoring program centering the experiences and bright ideas of women of colour. It was roughly the same time that I started seeing the beginnings of Sajani’s idea for - a space for collaboration and connection. I was thrilled to see something like take shape in my first island home. ⁣

The interviews piled up and the idea for Brown Girl in the Ring continued to emerge. Like many I hit a wall of doubt and had a bout of imposter syndrome. Who did I think I was producing a podcast without any sound production experience or networks? Who did I think I was trying to create a program in a city I no longer lived in.⁣

But as these things go, I started to see these questions of doubts as ways to test my idea to see if it was something I truly wanted to be a part of. The answer each time was a resounding yes - from me and the countless friends and family who kept me accountable. ⁣

Some 18 months later, three seasons in, a Change Maker Residency program underway; we brought together a handful of motivated and bright folks to share their ideas and experiences at Colombo Cooperative. We are learning as we go and I know this first and somewhat clunky first steps is the start of the impactful change we all want to see in our communities no matter where we live and where we call home. ⁣

Grateful for every person who has said yes, offered a helping hand or encouraging nod, listened and asked smart questions, and turned up. It means the world to me and encourages me to continue to chase this idea and watch it continue to take shape. 🧡⁣

Hello from Colombo! ⁣👋🏾

I’m thrilled and inspired to have lead our very first Change Maker Workshop on Design Thinking as part of the Brown Girl in the Ring Change Maker Residency program. Thank you to our Change Makers in Residence, Azmah of Kindred and Oenone of Night Shades ⁣for sharing their work in progress and insights into making change in their community.

Finally, a big thank you to Sajani and Sanju of Colombo Cooperative for their collaborative spirit and welcoming Brown Girl Pod to such a wonderful space. I cant wait to return again! ⁣

HEY! 👋🏽⁣

Ever had the experience of being pulled in so many different directions that something gets lost in the process? ⁣

This was the experience I had before starting Brown Girl Pod. There was a continuous tussle for my energy and attention that eventually led to things falling apart - for the better.⁣

This image by captures the moment a third runaway was located in the Orion Nebula some 1,300 light years away. It was “lost” for 540 years after a gravitational pull broke apart and pushed it out of its system of orbit.⁣

This season of Brown Girl Pod has been really special for a similar reason. It’s when I realised that this is what I needed to do right now and that I needed to give it the time and energy it deserved. All of this is because of the amazing people I’ve met, interviewed, and laughed with over the course of three seasons and for that I’m grateful. ⁣

This project is a work in progress which means I’ll be taking some time to regroup, travel, and work on the next season (and hold down a few other life commitments). ⁣

Thank you so much for tuning in and connecting in all the different ways that you do. - Deborah ✨
