Governor’s Gold Cup: NORTHEAST UNITED IN FINALS


Northeast United FC has reached the final of the 40th Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament being played here at Paljor Stadium.
The Shillong-based club overcame a strong Gokulam FC Kerala 2-0 in the semi-final played under floodlights on Wednesday evening. Both goals came in the second half.
Gokulam FC made several attempts to find an equalizer but were thwarted by some excellent goalkeeping from Northeast United goalie Arman Tamang who was declared as the Man of the Match.

The young colts of Chennaiyin FC stunned tournament favourites Church Boys United, Nepal 1-0 to clinch a semi-final berth in the 40th Governor’s Gold Cup here at Paljor Stadium.
Vishal R scored the all-important goal in the 86th minute to secure the hard-fought victory for the Chennai team. He was declared the ‘Man of the Match’ in the game played under floodlights on Tuesday evening.

The clubs from Malaysia and Dubai have expressed their gratitude to Chief Minister PS Golay and Sikkim Football Association for giving them an opportunity to play in the 40th Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament in Sikkim.
Though both the foreign clubs exited from the tournament, KDN FC (Malaysia) and Royal FC (Dubai) coaches mentioned that playing in a different weather and altitude lead to their weak performances. Just a day before the match, six players from KDN FC suffered from diarrhoea and could not play. Key players from Royal FC could not make this trip due to visa issues, it was shared at a press meet on Tuesday.

CM Gold Cup 2025 to kick-off in Jan


The highly anticipated Chief Minister's Gold Cup Tournament 2025 is set to take place at Jorethang playground in Namchi district, coinciding with the festive celebrations of Makar Sankranti.
Sharing this good news for football lovers via social media on Tuesday, Chief Minister PS Golay informed that the tournament would commence in the first week of January 2024. The tournament will now be officially known as ‘The Chief Minister's Open Gold Cup Tournament on the Eve of Makar Sankranti’, he said.
“This strategic renaming not only heralds a fresh identity for the event but also underscores a profound commitment to fostering the growth of football while celebrating the vibrant unity of sports and tradition. By intertwining the tournament with the cultural essence of Makar Sankranti, this initiative aims to amplify its significance, transforming it into a grand celebration that resonates with both sportsmanship and cultural pride,” said the Chief Minister.

SFA delegation calls on Governor


Sikkim Football Association (SFA) president Menla Ethenpa and vice president Arjun Roka called on Governor Om Prakash Mathur at Raj Bhavan here on Tuesday.
During the meeting, the SFA delegation briefed the Governor about the ongoing 40th All India Governor’s Gold Cup International Football Tournament 2024 which is being held at Paljor Stadium, Gangtok. They extended an invitation to the Governor to grace the finals of the tournament.
The Governor graciously accepted the invitation and also extended a financial contribution of Rs. 5 lakh as a gesture of support in the field of sports and to the ongoing tournament, a Raj Bhavan release informs.
Further, the Governor expressed his enthusiasm for the event and also encouraged on promotion of sports development in Sikkim.
The SFA president expressed his deepest gratitude to the Governor on behalf of the SFA for all his unwavering support, the release mentions.
