KVLP 101.5 - Visalia Local Power Visalia's Local Community Radio Station! Our astonishing ONE HUNDRED WATTS of stereo FM power offers Several of them are right here in Visalia.

KVLP is a non-commercial, educational FM broadcasting station, authorized by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on 101.5 MHz. With one hundred watts (yes, like a light-bulb) and a fifty-five foot tall antenna, we expect to reach about six miles and up to 40,000 households. We applied to the FCC in May 2000, along with thousands of nonprofit organizations. UNIVERSAL LIFE CHURCH, FOODLINK F

OR TULARE COUNTY, and KIWANIS CLUB OF WEST VISALIA will be offering interesting and unique programming, as KVLP presents local information from truly local sources. A permit to construct the station was granted in October 2003, and a minor modification to the original conditions has been approved by the FCC in April 2004. The station began operating under automatic program test authority on February 26, 2005. KVLP-LP received its full eight-year license from the FCC on December 3, 2005. Many want to know what "format" we are, as if some corporate media giant from Texas or New York controls us all, including what we see and hear via our public airwaves. Simply put, we're too big to stop. We are the only Visalia station: not only our license, but our antenna, transmitter, underwriting supporters, and volunteers. We cannot be bought, sold, or traded. We are not "Little Fresno", we are in the midst of the Garden of Eden. How it all evolves depends quite a bit on you and your and your families, friends, and neighbors. When you listen, tell us what you think and what you'd like that isn't available elsewhere. And we'll be listening, too.sewhere. And we'll be listening, too.

Yesterday (12-29-18) the FCC was notified that KVLP-LP has suspended operations. Thanks for listening, y'all!

The management of KVLP "Visalia Local Power" apologizes for the recent interruptions in on-air service. Starting out as a victim of the brutally hot summer temperatures, we then had intermittent (later fatal) equipment and power issues. Please hang with us, as we endeavor to resolve this without anyone getting hurt!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

“TEAM- KVLP”, sponsored by 101.5-FM, has three unusual kinetic sculpture entries in the Visalia Bike Project, a participant in Downtown Visalia’s St. Patrick’s Day parade on Saturday March 17 at 11am. Sculptures are an innovative way to recycle discarded or abandoned bicycles.

“RUSTBUCKET” is a stretch or comfort style with two 26” mountain-bike wheels. Its pilot is ALAN PARKER, an avid Visalia distance cyclist. It incorporates 2 ladies’ frames, steel banana seat, saddle-horn derived from a springer-seat, and ape-hanger handlebars atop KVLP’s signature “Stem Extender”. The extremely long chain is supported by a 15-speed derailleur drive train.

“VAPORIZER” is a 5-passenger long-tail cargo style with a 16” coaster brake and a 20” front wheel in a 26” fork. Its pilot is 101.5’s Board Member JASON JONES, the team’s welder and co-conspirator. It includes a 16” starter bike-frame welded to a 24” ladies’ road frame, along with “scraper” wheel tape. The 2-bear banana seat is supported by a sissy bar fashioned from an aluminum crutch and a lawn chair. Two more dancing bears enjoy the “glide-ride” made from the other crutch. Gear clusters welded to KVLP’s signature “Stem Extender” have earned this sculpture the nickname of “Dancing Bear Nipples”.

“SPIN DOCTOR” is a 5-wheeled mechanical novelty bike. Its pilot is BILL BALSLEY, the station’s General Manager and the team’s project manager. A rim that rides atop the front tire drives its oscillating wheels. A 16” Disney Princess bike was the source of KVLP’s signature “Stem Extender” and the Spin Doctor’s backbone. The pilot is the original owner of the 1972 Firestone 3-speed. CDs from the radio station are glued and inserted into the spokes.

BILL 'BAL(D)SLEY'
By Lewis Griswold, The Fresno Bee (Friday August 4, 2006)
Bill Balsley, 58, who started KVLP 101.5 FM low power radio station in Visalia, got a buzz cut Tuesday while the 1960s anthem "Hair" played in the background. The self-described "old hippie" let his locks grow long as a gag after his high school class reunion. Then he raised money for charity by promising to lop it in return for donations. He raised a groovy $700 for the Miracle Mile of Quarters, a project of the Kiwanis Club to benefit Children's Hospital Central California.
