During the early part of the pandemic, I created several live shows. Fitness Aces was one of them. It brought together fitness professionals from Austin, TX and Soto Grande, Spain. As tennis in Texas was one of the first things to open back up and both Dio and Josh were extremely busy, the show ceased before it was able to gain real traction...and it could have been so much more!

I am believe in the concept of virtual production and creating interactive experiences. With the advances made over the past several years, this type of production (with a few tweaks) makes it possible to share information more regularly than at conferences and with the 99.99% of people who could never attend most of them.

Have you ever wondered how you hear players bouncing the ball before they serve or how they strike the ball? The broadcasters have mics set up to capture the sound. They often have four (two at each end). As were starting at Austin Tennis Academy with mostly equipment already on hand, we're simply going to have one. At $600+ for each mic/blimp setup, we've chosen to leave this for a future upgrade!

Next time you watch tennis on television, look for the placement of microphones. There are more than these!

Part of getting Austin Tennis Academy ready for regular live broadcast is installing an infrastructure where we’re not needing to do full cable runs daily. This will save us a couple man hours each day. Today we’re adding couplers to enable extended cabling and protecting the ends of all cables from the elements when not in use.

This is one of the first pieces of gear we purchased when we began delving into live production (and possibly the only thing we’ve bought used). While we now have other more complex gear, it’s nice knowing we can still use the Allen & Heath ZED14 for many of the shows we do

In the spring of 2020, I used live streaming as a way to help keep my community abreast of a landscape which was constantly evolving. So was the case when I interviewed ATA College Prep Founding Head of School Carol Hagar.

I predict 2024 will see a marked increase in the use of live video. That’s why we at EKH Media have made significant investments in our capabilities to do live, virtual and hybrid programming. Additionally, I am personally invested in developing and deploying ways to make these events more immersive than people at home sitting in front of a screen and watching passively.

In this video, I continue through the build of EKH Studio1 in my garage. I realized there were wires and light stands galore strewn everywhere across the floor and devised a diy solution.

I’ve long had an interest in photography, but pursuing it had never been in the cards. Then one day 10 years ago Kim called and said she was at Best Buy looking at cameras. She said they had a new entry level SLR called the Rebel SL1 she wanted to get me so I could learn photography. They told her the Kit Lens wasn’t good and suggested a slightly better companion lens. The camera and lens were aps-c (which meant nothing to either of us)

I left the camera mostly in “sports mode” which seemed to make sense since I was shooting mostly tennis players. At some point I realized it could also shoot video which I thought was the neatest thing ever.

When it came to shooting interviews for The Day Davis Cup Came To Dallas, I was still shooting stills in Sports mode, video in Automatic, and thought the SL1 was a professional standard camera. While shooting, the camera consistently hunted for focus (I didn’t know how to put the camera in a manual focus mode).

I continued to use this camera for stills, even after buying a cinema camera and a mirrorless camera for video. It was largely retired several years ago when I purchased a Canon R. However, I still own it and some of my favorite images, including all the interviews associated with the Davis Cup project and many 1,000s of stills from Samuell Grand and Fretz might never have happened if Kim hadn’t indulged my interest in photography!

Before there was an EKH Media, there was just Duey and Kim looking to tell the story of what made the tennis center they ran special. We were blessed to tell the story of how Jack Turpin brought the first Davis Cup Tie played in a public tennis center to Samuell Grand TC in Dallas. Mr. Turpin, Nancy Jeffett, Marcus Freeman and Dennis Ralston have all passed since we sat down with them to capture their recollections, but their story lives on in the first video I ever produced. I’m proud to have called Mr. Turpin a friend and am forever grateful for having to opportunity to tell this story.
