25/11/2024

[Daily Korean Sentence]
The team leader of Marketing Team A and the team leader of Marketing Team B at the same company are fiercely arguing over different marketing strategies.

“We need to increase the online advertising budget for this campaign! We have to reflect fast-moving trends and target the younger audience!”

“What are you even talking about? This time, offline events and traditional advertising methods will be more effective! Listen to me!”

The disagreement between the two team leaders continued to escalate and eventually turned into a battle of pride. Unable to find common ground, the two leaders ultimately instructed their team members to “prepare both strategies for marketing.” The employees, facing overtime, were left frustrated.

“Why do we have to suffer because of the team leaders’ fight?!
Even if we work all night, we won’t be able to prepare both strategies...

[Daily Korean Sentence]
Drinking warm tea and trying to keep my body warm hasn’t done much to cure my sore throat. Despite all my efforts, I still feel unwell, so I even ended up getting an IV drip at the hospital yesterday. It feels like, at this rate, I might lose my voice completely, like the Little Mermaid.

If I were to describe my current condition, I think this Korean proverb sums it up perfectly:

“I feel like the inner leaves of a wilted napa cabbage.”

#시든배추속잎같다.
Think of a wilted cabbage… or any wilted vegetable. Can you imagine it, all limp and lifeless?

If you’ve been feeling low on energy, unwell, or completely drained lately, use this Korean proverb to describe your state in one simple sentence:

요즘 나는… 시든 #배추 속잎 같아.

21/11/2024

[Daily Korean Sentence]
I recently met up with a friend who’s a painter, and as soon as we sat down, they let out a deep sigh and began venting.

"Peter!! I’m so stressed out these days! If I keep living like this, I feel like I’ll starve to death. Should I give up on art and look for another job?"

My friend shared that while painting brings them the greatest joy in life, it doesn’t help them make ends meet. They were especially troubled because their mom, who values financial stability, has been clashing with them a lot lately.

"Peter!! My mom told me to quit right away!
I’m doing art, and my sibling is doing music—she says we should both stop immediately!"

"I can understand your mom’s point of view…
Art is wonderful, but survival is important, too. You must be struggling with this."

"My mom says I need to give up my dreams and start earning a living.
Peter, do you know what my mom keeps saying to me these days?"

"Oh no! I think I know exactly what she’s saying. Parents who value financial stability always say stuff like…Does Pay The Bills?"

20/11/2024

[Daily Korean Sentence]
Son Heung-min, the Korean football player playing for Tottenham, is famous for his ability to use both feet skillfully. In the history of the EPL, only Son Heung-min and his close teammate, Harry Kane—also right-footed—have scored over 40 goals with their weaker foot.

So, how did Son Heung-min become so adept at using his weaker left foot?
It’s thanks to his father, a former K-League player and also Son’s football mentor. His father consistently emphasized the importance of using both feet. He even taught Son to put on his left sock first and to use his weaker left foot when stepping into pants.

Thanks to this persistent practice, Son Heung-min has become the player he is today.

[Daily Korean Sentence]
These days, my coworker’s face looks so radiant. I wondered if something good had happened, so when the opportunity arose, I asked.

“Your face is glowing these days! Did something good happen?”

“Of course! I used to get so stressed out because I was bad at soccer, but now I’m learning tennis.
And every time I swing the racket, the ball connects so perfectly!
Even my coach says I have talent.”

“Oh~~ That’s awesome! Amazing!”

But tennis wasn’t the only thing my coworker was proud of. Lately, they’d been going on a few blind dates and bragged about being really popular with the ladies.

“Peter! I used to never get any attention on blind dates, but these days, women tell me I’m handsome and have a great personality~ It feels like a dream!”

My coworker said that life brings happy moments like these, and lately, they’ve been feeling pretty cool about themselves.

“Peter! These days, I really like myself!
나 요즘 #자신감 뿜뿜이야!”

[Daily Korean Sentence]
As soon as I get to work, a coworker hands me a warm cup of coffee.

“Peter! It’s cold today, isn’t it? When do you feel like winter has arrived?”

“Hmm~ Ah! I’ve got it! It’s when you start wondering every day before leaving work, ‘What winter snack should I pick up at the convenience store today?’ That’s when I feel like winter has come.”

“Peter!! Why are those warm hoppang (steamed buns) from the convenience store so delicious?”

“Have you tried the roasted sweet potatoes and bungeoppang (fish-shaped pastries) from the convenience store?”

“Of course! Should I get some perfectly roasted sweet potatoes or bungeoppang today? Buying winter snacks has become my daily joy!”

Many Koreans probably feel that winter is just around the corner when they see hoppang, bungeoppang, and roasted sweet potatoes being sold at convenience stores.
So today, let’s learn an expression that metaphorically conveys how close winter has come. Listen carefully!

15/11/2024

[Daily Korean Sentence]
Yesterday was the day of the College Scholastic Ability Test, the most important exam for Korean students. It was a day when all the attention of Koreans was focused on the test-takers around them. Korean mothers of high school seniors probably received a lot of calls like this last night:

"Hello! How did it go?
I wasn’t going to call, but… I was just too curious!!!
Your son is a senior, right? Did he do well on the test? He’s good at studying!"

A little while later, the phone rings again~

"Hello! You must’ve had a hard time helping your son prepare for the test again!
Let me treat you to a meal~~ But this time, he’s getting into Seoul National University, right?"

Around this time, mothers with test-takers find it most challenging to deal with calls from people around them. They earnestly wish that relatives, friends, and others wouldn’t call to ask how the test went!

When someone’s excessive interest or actions make you feel pressured, you can say something like this:
"그만해! 나 진짜 #부담스러워~"

[Daily Korean Sentence]
Lately, I've been feeling a strong need to exercise, so I decided to work out with a friend at the gym. My friend has even won awards at fitness competitions, so he's got a lot of muscle and takes excellent care of his health.

“Paul! Great decision! At our age, we really need to exercise! Let's try deadlifts—they're the best for strengthening your back and lower body!”

“Ahhh… Sorry! I don’t think I can do it! I feel like I'll hurt my back lifting this barbell.”

“Paul! Don’t be scared! First, stand in front of the barbell and spread your feet.”

Even though my friend kindly explained it to me, I felt hesitant about trying a new exercise.

“Sorry! I’m not doing it! I don’t think exercise is for me. I’d rather just read a book.”

“Paul, you need to build muscle before you get any older! Okay, how about we do just a few squats today? They’re the best for lower body strength!”

I wanted to say, “I don’t think exercise is for me,” but since my friend was so passionate about teaching me, I couldn’t say anything. I just had to go along and do as he said.

“Paul! Good! You’re doing great! If you keep working out consistently, you’ll build muscle for sure!
#노력은절대배신하지않아!”

13/11/2024

[Daily Korean Sentence]
I asked a friend who hasn’t shown up to our weekend soccer gatherings in a while if something had happened.

“Are you feeling unwell? Why haven’t you been coming out to play soccer?”

“Peter!!! I don’t play soccer anymore! I go to the mountains every weekend now. Last week, I went to Jirisan, and next week, I’m going to Naejangsan. The week after, Hallasan!”

My friend has recently joined a popular hiking community among Korea’s MZ generation and plans to take on the “100 Famous Mountains” program, where they’ll hike and document Korea’s top 100 mountains.

“Unbelievable! You don’t even like walking! Isn’t hiking hard?”

“Peter!! Just try going to the mountains once! Then you’ll understand why hiking has become a popular hobby for Korea’s MZ generation. It’s healing, and the sense of accomplishment when you reach the top is amazing!”

“So…does that mean no more soccer every weekend?”

“Of course! In my opinion, hiking is way more fun than soccer!
