After two years and 105 issues, we have made the difficult decision to end The Slant.

This project started out of the wake of the 2016 election, where we had a lot of time and a lot of drive. Now, we still have a lot of drive...but not so much time—which is tricky. But a much more compelling reason is that our mission—to tell the stories of underrepresented Asian / Pacific Islander / Desi Americans (APIDA)—is being fulfilled by incredible organizations. Whether it's our friends at , or , or , or The Aerogram, more and more APIDA stories are being told. And more and more APIDA can find what they're looking for.

We hope that this tiny contribution has encouraged our community to pursue Slant-like projects of their own. Because all it takes is just starting. I'm so excited to see what you all do, in and out of the APIDA community.

Looking for ways to celebrate Lunar New Year? Come check out “King of the Yees” a new play by friend of The Slant Lauren Yee at the San Francisco Playhouse. This heartwarming story follows Lauren as she searches for her father, a beloved leader in their Chinese American community, who has suddenly gone missing. In this journey through time and space, she explores Chinatown’s changing landscape and attempts to chronicle a vanishing piece of American culture.

AND a special treat - this Wed (2/6), our very own Andrew Hsieh will be moderating a post-play panel featuring Lauren Yee herself, alongside Karen Mok (The Cosmos Co-Founder), Thi Bui (author of The Best We Could Do), Angela Yip (AAMPLIFY Social Justice Director), and Vanessa Hua (Author of A River of Stars). If you haven't heard the name Bing Liu yet, get ready - because he's about to take the world by storm. Last week we spoke with the budding OSCAR NOMINATED (woo!!!) director about his film "Minding the Gap.” Since it's debut at the 2018 film festival, it's already received 28 award recognitions and is officially in the running for "Best Documentary Feature" at the Oscars. This film shook us to our cores. By capturing some of the most intimate and painful moments of his and his friends lives, he paints a powerful and breathtaking narrative on race, class, and what it means to be a man in modern America. ・・・
In ‘96 the Arnold crew had our Christmas party in a Hollywood bar, where we watched the special on a big TV. By the end, all the hipster bartenders had stopped working and just stood together watching to see what would happen. When this scene came on, I noticed that two of them were hugging and crying. And I thought “Wow, this is working! We can make people feel something good!”

That was an election for the books - nearly 114M ballots were cast in the midterm elections, and for the first time in history 2 Muslim women, 2 Native American women, and 1 openly gay man were voted into congress. Right now, at least 85 women (roughly 20% of the House) are guaranteed a seat. While there were some disappointing losses, there were many wins for us to be empowered by ✊🏼 This is America
