Afghanistan Information Service (AIS) is purposed to supply accurate, unbiased historical + current information & comment about the country that is presently called Afghanistan, in order to help genuine efforts to enable it develop peacefully. At the crossroads - and heart - of Central Asia, Afghanistan has a long + turbulent history; invasions began in 328 BC with Alexander the Great, followed by
the Scythians, White Huns + Turks. In AD 642, Arabs brought Islam. Then came the Persians; 1219, Genghis Khan + his Mongols. Ahmad Shah Abdali Durrani imposed Pashtun domination in 1747, the current country name means land of the Pashtun; many prefer the older, non-ethno specific Khorosan. 100 years later, Britain tried to use it as a buffer against the expanding Russian Empire. So-called independence came in 1919, after 3 wars. The USSR invaded in 1979, after 10 years was driven out by guerrilla fighters (mujahidin), supported by the U.S. + others. A bloody civil war between various mujahidin factions gave rise to warlordism until the ultraconservative, "harsh" Taliban seized power in 1996. After “9/11”, suspected support for terrorist groups + refusal to help find Osama bin Laden led to U.S.-led international coalition invention, which helped the Northern Alliance oust the Taliban from Kabul. The US installed Hamid Karzai as President against the wishes of the people. The legendary rugged terrain, the Hindu Kush mountains (5,000 to 25,000 feet) running down the center of the landlocked country, and at least 10 distinct ethnic groups makes central governance difficult. And general poverty, dependance on o***m growing for income, corrupt governance, interference from other countries + constant, unpredictable Taliban attacks strains loyalty to building a liberal democracy.
