The tenth album from roots rocker Jamie
Williams and his long-term band is an
engaging mix of straight-ahead rock,
country and blues. There are echoes of
Tom Petty everywhere and plenty of
rock'n'roll swagger on the likes of 'Ride
With Me' (a live recording) but also the
more unexpected: power pop (the
choppy beats and vocals of 'Love That's
True) and funk ('D'You Ever Get The
Feeling') for example.
Williams lays out his musical manifesto
on 'To Yourself', from whence the
album title comes. Words to live by,
for sure. Elsewhere, though, his lyrics
can sometimes be a little wanting, as
on 'Box Marked Fragile' or 'School Of
Hard Knocks' yet the band carry things
through with enthusiasm, commitment
and no little soul.
There are a lot of bands out there
doing this sort of thing in a pub near you
but Williams and his crew are several
cuts above the vast majority of them and
it would be a cold soul indeed who didn't
enjoy Stay True. Fundamentally, this is a
good-time band making good-time music
with no airs or graces, and Stay True is a
good-time calling card for them.
