This perspective of these iconic groups is written by ✨

New Edition and Girls Tyme/Destiny’s Child are different groups and generations. While Girls Tyme was newly forming, their name was inspiration for being the “girls time to shine.” This new girl group from Houston, Texas would need time and experience before their domination. New Edition had set their iron tracks all the way from Boston, Massachusetts.

Although these two groups are different, they share a key element. A group of friends who work very hard to achieve success while being young in the politics of the music industry landscape. For the past 45 years, New Edition has managed to perform under the names New Edition, Bell Biv DeVoe, Heads of State and RBRM. There’s six members. Have they all been in each group? No. The group names aren’t hard to figure out which group members are in them. There was originally five members.

Their sixth member has also worked in other groups beyond the ones his five brothers embraced him in. This is the versatile and business mindset of their brotherhood. Of course some of them have been upset and left tours. Remember when they showed up in their own tour buses, exhausting expenses? However, as of today they’ve been working it out and getting their bread.

The way their fans accept them all together is a far cry from some of Destiny’s Child fans, who will cheer on New Edition but in the next moment disparage the nine girls that have fought hard for their dreams as well. Add that to being women in the industry. Sisterhood in general can be complex to navigate. Especially without dedicated mediators. Grace must be given.
