PawSox hall of fame announced

The Pawtucket Red Sox have announced the formation of
the PawSox Hall of Fame, debuting this coming season at McCoy Stadium with an inaugural class of inductees.

The PawSox Hall of Fame will recognize the outstanding careers of former PawSox players, managers, coaches, broadcasters, and executives. A selection committee comprising Pawtucket Red Sox and Boston Red Sox staff, past and present media personnel, area business leaders, and representatives from the
community will be responsible for electing candidates.

Nominations can be made via fan submissions, either by hard mail, email ([email protected]), or by using the Twitter hashtag . To be eligible for nomination, players, managers, and coaches must have spent at least part of one year with the PawSox and must have been out of uniform for at least three
years. The feats of non-uniformed PawSox personnel will be chosen by a unanimous vote of the Selection Committee.

“We’re excited to establish the PawSox Hall of Fame, which will recognize the most impactful figures in our franchise’s history,” said PawSox Senior Vice President/General Manager Dan Rea. “We’re also pleased to introduce a public nomination process, giving our fans the opportunity to push the candidacies of their favorite figures from our club’s rich past.”

The first class of PawSox Hall of Fame members will be inducted during a ceremony held during the 2016 season, and the date of that ceremony and other details about the Hall of Fame will be announced in the coming weeks. The inaugural class will be announced after the New Year and individual Hall of Fame
plaques will eventually reside in a special area at McCoy Stadium.

GALLERY 175 FEATURES ARTISTS WITH FAMILY CONNECTIONS

Gallery 175 in downtown Pawtucket has an exhibit of the artwork of three artists who have family connections. Alexander Budnitz, a photographer, is showing work alongside that of his mother, Toba Weintraub, a painter, and that of his mother-in-law, print-maker, Margot Rocklen. The exhibit runs through Feb. 27 A reception for the artists will take place on Sunday, Jan. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Although connected by family, the artists work in different media, styles, and themes. Budnitz, a Boston-based graphic/web designer and photographer creates prints of manipulated and enhanced photographs combined with graphic elements, digital effects, and carefully considered compositions. The results convey moodiness, nostalgia, and/or intrigue.

A series of paintings by his mother, Toba Weintraub, a resident of Pawtucket, depict views from her window that overlooks the Blackstone River. With simple shapes, painterly textures, and skillfully nuanced colors, Weintraub captures the essence of the seasons of the year. Margot Rocklen, on-the-other-hand, is a printmaker from Connecticut who works with a bold color palette and lots of pattern. In her Piscine Series, fish swim though aquatics delightfully energized by abstract shapes and swirling forms. The diversity of the work on exhibit reveals three different creative impulses and aesthetic sensibilities carried out in various creative mediums.

The gallery is located at 175 Main St. adjacent to the Blackstone Valley Tourism Center and across from historic Slater Mill. The gallery is open free of charge from 10 a.m. to 4 pm daily and there is ample parking. For more information, visit Gallery175.com.

Best Quality Physical Therapy Care in Rhode Island: Performance Physical Therapy

Therapists offer seniors golden opportunities

Senior’s are living well into their golden years due to healthier lifestyles and better health care. Approximately 95 percent of the aging population in the United States lives independently. With ageing seniors staying at home, there is a risk of injury as the result of a fall. In honor of National Senior Citizens Day on Aug. 21, originally established by President Reagan more than 20 years ago, physical therapists across the country are reminding communities that they are an important resource, helping seniors stay healthy, active and safe during their golden years.

“Fall prevention is not talked about enough among the senior community,” stated Dr. Bethany Carnevale of Performance Physical Therapy in a company press release. “It’s a real threat, but one that can be prepared for and safeguarded against. It’s important that we empower the aging population to stay independent and active within their communities and among their friends and families. It’s all about providing the right knowledge, not only among seniors but with their families and caregivers, too.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, one out of three adults age 65 or older falls each year but less than half talk to their health care providers about it.

Here are a few tips to stay safe at home, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the Mayo Clinic:

-- Keep moving and include gentle exercise daily that is a mix of cardiovascular, balance and stretching.

-- If you avoid physical activity because you're afraid it will make a fall more likely, then a physical therapist can create a safe, custom exercise program aimed at improving your balance, flexibility, muscle strength and gait.

-- Review your medications with your physicians and physical therapist because some may impair sight, walking and balance.

-- Remove hazards such as loose rugs, electrical cords and boxes from walkways.

-- Communicate concerns with your peers, family and providers. Physical therapy companies offer services such as individualized gait training and social classes such as A Matter of Balance.

“We are able to help senior citizens develop safe and comprehensive programs for their physical health and provide recommendations on how to ensure continued safety while performing everyday tasks,” said Carnevale.

Elder abuse reporting bill passes R.I. House

The National Center on Elder Abuse reported last year that during 2010, there were nearly 6 million reported cases of abuse of senior citizens, representing nearly 10 percent of that year’s population of seniors.

Center officials acknowledged that they really don’t know for sure how many seniors are suffering from abuse and neglect either because signs of abuse and neglect are missed by professionals working with older Americans or because of reluctance on the part of seniors to report abuse.

To help seniors being victimized and to encourage more reporting of abuse cases the House of Representatives passed legislation Wednesday, June 4, introduced by Rep. Elaine A. Coderre (D-District 60, Pawtucket) that will allow the release of patient records for investigation and prosecution if a health care provider believes that the patient is or has been physically, psychologically or sexually abused, neglected or exploited. The legislation, 2014-H 7091A, provides for the reporting of such abuse to the appropriate law enforcement personnel in addition to the Division of Elderly Affairs, according to a release from the Legislative Press Bureau.

The Coderre legislation, which was requested by the office of Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin, now goes to the Senate for consideration. A companion Senate bill, 2014-S 2094, introduced by Sen. Catherine Cool Rumsey (D-District 34, Charlestown, Exeter, Hopkinton, Richmond, West Greenwich), is before the Senate Committee on Judiciary.
