When James Wood Rogers tried to escape British authorities in Sudan in 1912 for his elephant poaching activities, he was shot and killed just as he entered Belgian Congo. Read about the furor in the US House of Representatives. Who was this James Wood Rogers? One photo below shows Captain Fox, an Olympics competitor in rowing, who led the Sudanese soldiers out to catch Rogers for hunting elephants illegally. Read the whole story in Christine Nicholls' latest blog on our website oldafricamagazine.com

A 'phantom' question from our History Quiz in issue 91. We just received an email from a reader, who has searched issue 91 in vain for the answer to question one in our History Quiz. The question asked what song Graham Carr played on his accordion at the Malaba border post. The answer is in an article that got dropped at the last minute, when one of our other stories took more pages than we had thought. So, no matter how hard you look, you won't find the answer to that question. If you have been searching for the answer to our 'phantom' question, we apologize. You won't find it. But if you send in the correct answers to the other nine questions, we will enter your name into the draw to win two nights at Satao Camp.

Database of Europeans in East Africa 1880-1939

A database prepared by Peter Ayre and Christine Nicholls is now on the internet at http://www.europeansineastafrica.co.uk
It features 25,000 Europeans who were in East Africa (mainly in Kenya) before 1939 and provides personal and career details of each.

The database will be ‘live’ for a year or so, to give an opportunity for information to be added, or corrections to be made, and then it will be hosted by a scholarly library.

If you have any information you would like to add, after viewing an entry, or any corrections, please email [email protected]
