MYTHS ABOUT MODELING:
1. “You have to be at least 5’7 and a size ‘0’.
Truth: There are many different types of modeling! Runway, promotional, fashion/editorial, parts, plus size, commercial, swimsuit, lingerie, fitness, etc.!
You do NOT need to be tall or extremely thin to be a model! Each type of modeling is different and there is more opportunity than people realize!
2. “All Models have eating disorders”.
Truth: Most models follow a very regimented diet and workout schedule. Many models have personal trainers that make sure they are eating the correct amount/type of food as well as getting the correct amount of exercise!
3. “Models are shallow and self-centered.”
Truth: A professional model understands that they are just the canvas for whatever they are selling. Their job is to sell a product or service. Professional Models are in the industry of sales. The end result is to make the product/service look great so that consumers want whatever they are selling.
4. “Models sleep their way to the top.”
Truth: A peofessional model knows that if they want to stay in the game, their professionalism and reputation take top priority. The models that have lasted the longest in the industry are the ones who put business first and leave their personal lives to when they are off-the-clock. Sleeping with a client is a surefire way to limit their profession due to discrepancies in the workplace.
5. “Models have Daddy Issues.”
Truth: Many models grow up with healthy homes and have been encouraged to pursue their passions, including the entertainment industry. They usually have a stable support system which is critical when first starting out in the industry… Because this industry can be harsh.
6. “Social media modeling is still modeling.”
Truth: While social media is a great way to market your look/skills, many individuals call themselves ‘Instagram Models’ which, is not an actual type of professional modeling. A Social Media Influencer who is being sponsored for their advertisement/product or service promotion is rapidly becoming popular with individuals who want to pursue modeling but a Social Media Influencer is not the same as a professional model.
7. “You need to have sexy images to be a model.”
Truth: While many professional models do have some sexier images in their portfolio, many modeling opportunities and clients base their decision of booking a model off of their commercial looks. Yes, there is a need to show the model’s frame. No, a model does NOT have to partake in n**e or lingerie shoots in order to get booked.
8. “If you want to become a professional model, you have to have as many shoots done as possible!”
Truth: A bad photo shoot, an inexperienced photographer, or too many images will ruin a budding model’s career within a heartbeat. Their career will be over before they know it.
Quality over quantity, ALWAYS!!!
If an individual wants to model, they need to do their research! They know to contact only photographers who are well-known in the modeling industry and it is best to stick with agency-accredited photographers. Don’t rely on photographers who try to sell you on how ‘amazing’ they are. An experienced photographer does not need to sell you on their services since their portfolio will speak for itself.
9. “Only accept paying model assignments from the start!”
Truth: Many successful, professional models started out by either having TFP(Trade for Print) shoots and/or paying an agency-accredited photographer to help them build their portfolio. Once a model has proven their credibility in the industry, clients will pay! A new model will have to prove themselves before they start making great money. If a model doesn’t have experience, a client is less likely to pay for their services or even book them, at all.
10. “Models are fake.”
Truth: Many models are successful because they are easy to work with, flexible, reliable, and put the agency and client’s needs first. Yes, a model may end up wearing extensions, makeup, nails, have bodywork done, etc., but their dilligence, clarity, honesty, and hard work ethic are why most models have become as successful as they are! Being able to be completely honest with themselves and others are the keys to unlock a successful modeling career!
