Composting is good. Very good, in fact. You get to avoid tossing vegetable scraps in the garbage so the bin doesn’t fill as quickly; there’s less garden debris to dispose of; and the end result is a rich soil amendment you couldn’t even buy.

Countdown to CoP16: Ever wondered why hammerhead sharks look a little funny? Scientists believe their hammer-shaped head helps them see and find their prey better. Hammerheads are one of the only sharks that may swim in large groups and are primarily harvested for their fins. One of their shark cousins, the porbeagle shark, has been observed playing with floating objects in the ocean and is highly valued for its meat. Both are threatened by targeted and bycatch fisheries. The United States is supporting proposals to list porbeagle and three species of hammerhead sharks (scalloped, great, and smooth) in CITES to help ensure the international trade of these sharks is sustainable. Taken off the coast of Mexico's Holbox Island by amateur photographer Sandra Critelli, this breathtaking picture captures the migration of thousands of rays as they follow the clockwise current from Mexico's Yucatan peninsula to western Florida.
