Abuja Stampede: 10 persons including four children dead - Police

The FCT Police Command has said no fewer than ten persons including four children lost their lives in stampede around Maitama, Abuja while struggling to grab Christmas palliative.

The Spokesperson of the command, SP Josephine Adeh who made the disclosure, warned events organizers to always adhere to safety procedures in distributing gifts to the vulnerable.

Simon Ekpa, a leader of Nigeria's banned secessionist movement, is being held at Kylmäkoski prison in Finland, one of the world's toughest prisons. He was arrested four weeks ago along with four others on suspicion of terrorism-related offenses. The Finnish government has also frozen the assets of companies associated with Ekpa and his accomplices. Ekpa, a Finnish citizen of Nigerian origin, leads a faction in exile of the Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob) fighting for a breakaway state in southeastern Nigeria. Ekpa will spend Christmas and New Year in a prison that is known to house the most dangerous criminals in Finland.

Vice President Kashim Shettima commissioned Floating Production Storage Vessel.

Today, at the Drydocks World Dubai Shipyard in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, I had the privilege of representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the commissioning and naming ceremony of a $315 million Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) vessel.

This development is a significant milestone for President Tinubu’s oil sector reforms, particularly in boosting Nigeria’s oil production capacity.

The FPSO vessel, with a storage capacity of one million barrels, will commence with an initial production of 17,000 barrels per day, which is expected to increase to 30,000 barrels per day (bpd). The vessel is scheduled to depart for Nigeria in Q1 2025 and begin production at the Okwok Oil Field in the first half of the year.

This facility represents more than just a maritime infrastructure project; it stands as a testament to the success of President Tinubu’s reforms in the oil sector and Nigeria’s expanding global influence.

Isiokpo Kingdom in Rivers State always organise a Bicycle Carnival as part of its yuletide activities.

The carnival attracts thousands of spectators from across Rivers State who come to showcase their cycling skills, experience the vibrant culture, and connect with others.

It is one of the biggest bicycle carnival in Nigeria and usually held on the 31st of December in Isiokpo.

PDP expels Ikenga Ugochinyere over gross indiscipline, insubordination, and anti-party activities

The member representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State and Spokesman of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere has been expelled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect over gross indiscipline, insubordination and anti-party activities.

The expulsion was conveyed in a letter by the Ideato LGA chapter of the party dated December 5, 2024, and signed by the LGA Chairman, Hon. ThankGod Okeke and the Secretary, Onyebuchi Umeh which they addressed to the State Chairman.

The expulsion followed the report of the party's disciplinary committee, dated November 27, 2024, which investigated misconduct charges against Ugochinyere in line with Section 57 (1-4) of the PDP constitution 2017 as amended.

The lawmaker had been suspended at his Umuopia/Umukegwu ward on October 14, 2024, after failing to honour invitation to appear before the ward Executive Committee on October 5, 2024, to answer to allegations of disciplinary offences, and ignoring reminders and further invitation sent to him on October 7, 2024.

The letter partly read: “Upon receipt of the report, the LGA Executive Committee of Ideato North met on the 5th December, 2024, and unanimously adopted the report of the disciplinary committee.

“In light of this, Hon. Imo Ugochinyere Ikeagwonu is hereby expelled from the party (PDP) with immediate effect and he ceases to be a member of the Peoples Democratic Party in Umuopia/Umukegwu ward of Ideato North LGA.”

The party found Ugochinyere guilty of deliberate failure to attend meetings and participate in activities of the party for a long time in breach of Section 58 (1)e) of the PDP constitution 2017 as amended. He was said to have engaged in unauthorised publicity of disputes within the party which contravenes section 58(1)i of the party's constitution. Also, he formed parallel executive and organs of the party in his ward, and at the LGA and National levels which also breaches the party's constitution.

Furthermore, he was found guilty of consistently making derogatory and provocative public statements against the party and some of its national leaders, an action that brought the party to public ridicule.

Biden pardons son Hunter in final weeks of US presidency

US President Joe Biden on Sunday issued an official pardon for his son Hunter, who was facing sentencing for two criminal cases, despite assurances that he would not intervene in his legal troubles.

“No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son — and that is wrong,” the president said in a statement.

The move is sure to bring about fresh scrutiny over the independence of the US judicial system — especially at a time when incoming president Donald Trump has moved to appoint loyalists to the FBI and Justice Department himself.

The younger Biden was convicted earlier this year of lying about his drug use when he bought a gun — a felony — and has also pleaded guilty in a separate tax evasion trial, but had not faced sentencing.

Joe Biden, who is in the final weeks of his presidency before Trump takes office on January 20, had repeatedly said he wouldn’t pardon his son.

“I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted,” President Biden said in Sunday’s statement.

“The charges in his cases came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election,” he added.

“I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice.”

The pardon comes as criminal cases against President-elect Trump have stalled after a sweeping ruling on presidential immunity by the Supreme Court — all but ensuring Biden’s Republican rival will likely never see a jail cell, even after his landmark conviction for falsifying business records in May.

US presidents have previously used pardons to help family members and other political allies.

Bill Clinton pardoned his half-brother for old co***ne charges and Trump pardoned the father of his son-in-law for tax evasion, though in both cases those men had already served their prison terms.

Trump has vowed to pardon supporters who stormed the US Capitol in a deadly riot on January 6, 2021, in a bid to reverse his 2020 election loss.

He referenced them in a social media post late Sunday, writing, “Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!”

Hunter Biden pleaded guilty in a tax evasion trial in September, facing up to 17 years in prison. For the separate gun charge, he was facing 25 years in prison.

His lawyers have said he was only being brought before the court because he is the son of the president.

Hunter has paid the back taxes, as well as penalties levied by authorities, and previously reached a plea deal that would have kept him out of jail — but that agreement fell apart at the last minute.

His case has long been a thorn in the Biden family’s side, particularly during this election year when Republicans have charged that Hunter was being treated too leniently.

President Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris took much of the zeal out of the Republican drive to make an example out of his son.

Still, prosecutors appeared unwilling to cut him any slack, rejecting a so-called “Alford plea,” whereby Hunter Biden would admit guilt because of the high probability of conviction, but would maintain his innocence.

In a statement to US media, Hunter Biden, who has grappled with drug addiction, said he would “devote the life I have rebuilt to helping those who are still sick and suffering.”
