Dear “It Was Just a Dream”-ers
By Robin OK
Dear Dreamers Dismissing the Dreams,
Years ago, I woke from an intense, visual, distressing dream. I didn’t understand anything about it. I wanted to simply push it aside and add it to the pile of “Eh - it was just a dream” scenes, yet I couldn’t. Images kept re-playing in my mind, details kept clarifying – it haunted me, taunting me to pay attention.
In the dream, I am running through a field, holding a wolf skin high above my head, like a shield. As I run, I look down – I am barefoot. Strewn about the ground are dead sheep. Not only that, but their intestines are falling out, making a slimy maze.
There is more, but you get the gist. Why the heck would a relatively “normal” mid-western middle-aged mama have such a horrifying visceral dream? (That question wouldn’t leave me alone.)
That week, in line at Whole Foods, Spirituality & Health magazine grabbed my attention. On the cover: “DREAM GAMES – EVEN YOUR NIGHTMARES CAN HEAL.” (I bought it!)
The article was written by my now-esteemed dream teacher, Robert Moss. It expanded my perception and experience of both dreaming and waking life. One of the lines was, “When we see things in night dreams we don’t like, we need to pay careful attention, because we are being shown elements in our life situation that require understanding and action.” (Whoa).
I learned Robert Moss’s Lightning Dreamwork Game and joined an online Forum with hundreds of dreamers around the globe. There, we shared dreams following the Game’s precise method. Though we had never met, we delved into deep dialogue.
I learned that the only “expert” on the meaning of a dream IS the dreamer. However, we can engage in dialogue to clarify the story plus each element within. Just as we seek input of others to comprehend our waking life, so it is with dreams. Dialogue leads to unexpected connections and conclusions.
At least half of our lives are spent in dream-state. Why would we dismiss this piece of our consciousness, calling it “just a dream”? Dreams are a portal into a collective consciousness that provides clues to forewarn, heal, create, connect and impact waking life in profound and powerful ways.
I have learned that a single dream (even a snippet) may hold multiple lessons over time. Case in point: My Wolf-Lamb Dream. My conclusion years ago was that those dead sheep were, in effect, reverse “shepherds” to lead me home to dreams and dreamers. And so it did.
However, today, as I write? Today, as I re-visit the messages of wolves, sheep, entrails - with hindsight about my waking life since? Well, let’s just say…. It all makes sense.
