Today, we honour the life and legacy of the one and only Bob Marley on what would have been his 80th birthday. More than just a musician, Marley was a visionary, a revolutionary and a global icon whose message of love, unity and resistance continues to inspire generations.

His music transcended borders, giving a voice to the oppressed and spreading the spirit of reggae worldwide. Here are some fascinating facts about Bob Marley that showcase his journey and lasting impact.

🎤 The Wailers were originally called The Teenagers then The Wailing Rudeboys, before finally settling on their iconic name in 1963.

👩🏿‍🏫 Raised Catholic, Bob embraced Rastafari in the 1960s under the mentorship of Mortimo "Kumi" Planno, leading him to formally convert and grow his dreadlocks.

☮ In 1978, the UN awarded Bob the Peace Medal of the Third World for uniting political rivals in Jamaica, recognizing his fight for justice and peace.

🇿🇼 His song Zimbabwe (1979) was a rallying cry for liberation. He personally funded his trip to perform at the nation's Independence Ceremony, uniting reggae with revolution.

🎸 Bob was buried with his red Gibson Les Paul guitar, a Bible, a football, a ring from Haile Selassie’s family, and a stalk of ganja—each symbolizing his passions and beliefs.
