one way or another it's gonna be a canada special this friday on The OTHer Hours on The Crew Rock Radio - either the extended Canada Special with the full ausFunkt interview and a load of great Canadian Tunes, or The Alternative Atlas, with loads of great Canadian alternative music. We didn't want to upset anyone by choosing either the Maple Leaf or the Fleur-de-Lis, so we opted for the silly way out and the frozen k**b shaped iceberg that appeared off the canadian coastline last year.

canada's alternative atlas script finally complete, lemon and ginger tea on the go at work ready for tonight's mammoth recording session. i've got no idea what the final run time is going to be or whether the attempts at humour will be well recieved, but it should be up at some point overnight tonight.

based on the new format i'm definitely going to have to re-write the NZ one and completely reconfigure the australian one.

made some great discoveries music wise while putting it together too, on top of Double Eyelid, Shirley & The Pyramids, Bridgeland, Annie-Claude Deschênes, The Trade-Offs, a mourning death, and so much more.

now to await the disappointment when i find out that the reason half of the playlist don't have pages i can tag is that they've gone inactive.

how i limit my screen time at night. when i get home, i don't plug the laptop in. when the battery saver comes on, it's time to sleep. otherwise i end up til 4am writing radio scripts.

Also, theres a LOT of talking in this Alternative Atlas project for Oh the humanities around the 14 tracks included in it. not much info on the artists, but a fair bit about the different bits of Canada. im gonna have fun recording that one tomorrow night. a bit of a contrast to the Revolt Into Style : New Music for punks/new wavers companion programme, but a good bit of the music will be of interest.

the lost Australia episode of the Alternative Atlas will be turning up soon too.

on The Crew Rock Radio this Friday, another chance to hear the Canada day special and the ausFunkt interview in full.

happy tuesday everybody - apologies for being a day late - following on from Native Son, we've gone with Creedence Clearwater Revival.

any connection you can think of other than anything relating to sons or other family members as that's how we got here.

there's loads to go on here:

to give credence to something is to believe it ot put stock in it, take it as a given

clearwater is a place in florida - make of that what you will, or indeed split it into "clear" and "water" if you like.

and of course revival - to bring something from the past to life, potentially a resurrection link there

that's just the band name - there's the whole connection of it to the vietnam war, and anti-war sentiment not to mention the concept of being fortunate.

a couple of less obvious prompts to get the grey matter ticking over:
- it was written by John Fogarty, who issued a cease and desist after its unauthorised use in a political campaign.
- it was quoted and referenced multiple times in the book The Winter of Frankie Machine by Don Winslow
- it's featured in both American Dad and Family Guy
- Wyclef Jean covered for use in the 2004 remake of the Manchurian Candidate - a cover version of a classic song in a cover version of a movie if you will.
- it was actually released as a double A-Side with "down on the corner" and appeared on their fourth studio album, W***y and the Poor Boys released in November 1969.

our second track on chapter 3 of the linx project is Native Son by Bryan Adams. we got here by the similar subject content about indigenous people being mistreated by a society that's excluded them, so we'll be leaving connections of that ilk behind as we look for the next track that will follow on from it.

Bryan Adams is a canadian artist, this was on "into the fire" (we've already had fire/flames etc this chapter,and dokken's into the fire is already on at the end of chapter 2) - his fifth album released in 1987 on A&M records, which was critically panned despite lead single "heat of the night" gaining a bit of traction.

his most well known commercial success was tied into a Robin Hood movie, however his collaborations with former spice girl Mel C, Tina Turner, Sting & Rod Stewart were also fairly prominent.

as far as the song title goes, as we're leaving the idea of natives being mistreated behind, links on that front might be sparse, but there might be something in there. there's definitely lots of potential in the son/family aspect of things for connections, including one really obvious one.

we're kicking off chapter 3 this week, and our starting point is Midnight Oil's Beds are Burning.

now we did link to this via "fire" (in this context referring to combustion), so we're looking for anything that can be connected to it by any other means:

midnight oil were formed in australia and used to play to remote indigeous communities - Peter Garrett, Jim Moginie and Rob Hirst wrote "Beds Are Burning" to criticize how said populations were often forcibly removed from their lands, highlighted by the lyric "it belongs to them, let's give it back".

There are specific references to certain Australian places and politics, such as Kintore Ranges and the town of Yuendumu, vehicles produced by the Holden company, the "It's Time" slogan and the notion of "fair go"

on the obvious side of things, you've got "midnight" as an option, which could link to many a thing on a chronology based connection, and "oil" which is is open to many connections. beds and sleeping etc, Released in August 1987, the B-side was "Gunbarrel Highway", it hit number 1 in 8 countries and is listed as one of the 500 songs that shaped rock and roll by the rock and roll hall of fame.

so once again, anything NOT involving fire/combustion, but any other connection is good :)
