I was feeling overwhelmed yesterday. So many things are happening at work and it's just busy. On my way home, I thought about what someone I had just met said to me as we were what felt like neck deep in trying to find a solution, "You sound like me... I should have met you earlier."

Later that day, I participated in a strategic leadership session with the agency's senior and executive leaders...AS A SENIOR LEADER. Bruh, I really do be forgetting that I'm in a role that requires me to make decisions and to executing decisions, creating solutions and facilitating them--I be sleeping on Nikki.

I said all that to say, I gotta get okay with experiencing turbulence in order to get to my destination. It may be a bit bumpy but as long as I stay on path with my vision we gonna get there.

I might throw up a little though.

It is so easy for servant leaders to get caught up in the business of serving their employer (i.e. the government, a nonprofit, or company), and create processes that do not serve the people impacted by the mission.

If I could rule the world, the people, would come first. Despite the politics, the laws, the red tape, the funding-- despite it all. I never want my work to be done in vain or to push an agenda that doesn't SERVE the PEOPLE.

Today, I am whispering a prayer for the people who need help helping. I see the work you are doing, and trust, a Metamorphosis is coming.

It's easy to allow moment of discomfort stop you from following through with commitments, responsibilities, and lifestyle choices that are healthier. But if we stayed comfortable, how would we grow? Today we pray for discomfort, but not too much, just enough to grow.

In my adult life, I have witnessed what's become a countless amount of mothers share the stories of their children's death by the hand of police in this country. Last week, I swore that I would not watch the video of Tyre Nichols because I didn't want to witness yet another black soul lose his life.

Yesterday, I caved. I watch clips of what was Tyre's last moments. I watch the interview of his parents. Heard them describe their son's life with tears, pain and grief. Then I heard this woman say, "I feel sorry for them". Y'all I really wasn't ready. But I watched. Holding my baby, crying.

It's not fair for me to choose not to watch. That's a privileged thing to say. As a black mother of two black children, I watched because I need to equip my children appropriately. I watched because watching RowVaughn felt like watching myself. I watched because I have so many questions that need answers and I need have informed conversations within the systems I work in.

While I can't imagine feeling sorry for five people who are responsible for killing my son, I can respect and understand her remorse for the families of those black boys who wanted their sons to be a light in a system that was institutionally again people who looked like them. She felt sorry because anyone of those men could've been her son. She felt sorry for the other black mothers who just lost their sons. She felt sorry for the shame, dishonor and disgrace that those black men have on the black community.

Yall there's a numbness that I feel because this experience happens so frequently. I pray for the women in America who have lost a child to police violence. I pray for the people working in the criminal justice system to one day come up with the solution. And I pray for the souls, like mine, who watched the videos and are following this case who are traumatize, numb, angry, scared, and want answers. Please don't allow the actions of others to disturb your peace, changes has to come.

I've been struggling y'all. Depression has me feeling worthless, unproductive, unmotivated, and tired. On top of the stressors of transition at work and growing a baby, my mental health and ME are battling everyday. I may not have been creating content but I've been practicing mindfulness, in how I cook and eat, in how I budget, in how I parent-- in how I pray.

Today is National Day of Prayer and I've been praying for strength for weeks. Today, though, I observed in my angel garden six elephant ear sprouts. I had bought one bulb last year which went dormant over winter and all but died after the snow storm hit. Then I bought three bulbs in March because I just knew my elephant ear would not return. A few weeks before the last frost, I planted my new bulbs and transplant the damaged bulb-- accepting the likelihood that it would probably not resprout. In total I has 4 bulbs. This morning I counted six sprouts. The bulb that I thought was dead was actually creating new roots.

My feelings of worthlessness and worry are me looking at the surface or whats blooming now. When I acknowledge my roots--my strengths, my supports, things I am grateful for, my goals-- I realize that there are more sprouts to come. This Day of Prayer and My Whispered Prayer of the Day I value the quality of my roots.

Not a great mental health day for me.

The worries and burdens of life are weighing heavy, but I know I have my tribe to lean on when things get tough (key component of resilience). This morning, I sat and meditated for clarity and a question came to mind: How am I growing? In so many different ways my abilities are still seedlings--pushing their way across the surface and nowhere near ready to offer anything of value. I asked God to help me see. I was offered, CLARITY will come, but how will you order your steps? So, I asked for guidance, too. My answers will come I'm sure of it.

This morning, I got up before sunrise and went into my garden with the sole purpose of harvesting some greens for my colleagues at work. I walked into the nippy air, with my house dress and slippers, my garden shears, and several groceries bags (ran out of ziplocks) to hold my harvest. I bent over, bending my legs outwardly to mind my very pregnant belly and started snipping away. Snipping away, but also mindful of the crop I would harvest for myself, I quickly filled my each bag with black romaine lettuce, arugula, Georgia collards, and then finally some oregano. I faintly smiled--happy that my coworkers and their families would get to taste some of my harvest. I looked over in my other beds and saw my garlic, scallions, green beans, and okra beginning to sprout after a couple days of rain. As the sun came up, I walked into the house, looked up, and whisperer, "Thank you".

Better late than never! Our first Mindful Monday came with stresses of life and the perfect opportunity to practice what I preach! This Monday Monday we're talking about relaxation techniques.

It's finally April, and The Prayer She Whispered is back with NEW mindfulness content for you to use in your everyday life. I am Nikki Brown, the founder and host behind this platform and advocate for the voices of women, the underserved and marginalized, and the seemingly muted individual on their journey to finding their voice. I do this through mindfulness, self-care, and self-actualization techniques.

This month, the Prayer She Whispered will share a collection of materials focused on SOWING SEEDS. The act sowing seeds is more than merely planting, watering, and watching seed grow--although it's a powerful activity within itself. The Sowing Seed Collection will highlight the harvesting of our latent qualities and abilities that have yet to sprout and lead to our ultimate success.

The platform is NOT a religious platform. It is a platform informed by all all spiritual avenues that highlight mindfulness techniques and practices, including Prayer. So, when thinking about seeds, multiple religions including Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism and even some Mexican cultures all view the seed as something powerful. This month our Mindful Monday episode with highlight techniques that help up plan and harness growth, we will Go Live with visualization Meditations and affirmations, and we are putting the spotlight on SOWING FINANCIAL SEEDS in an interview with CEO of Simmons Financial, Danyelle Simmons! I am so excited to share these spaces with yall! See y'all soon.

Whispered Prayer of the Day

This phase in my life a called "what to do when things are out of my control". I am wise enough to know that there's not a lot I can do, but I will do what I can with what I can control. Over the weekend, I sowed plenty seeds with a hope of a bountiful spring. I'm also in a phase of transition. Transitioning as a new mother to a daughter, transitioning in my roles at work, transitioning into a new lifestyle where my health and wellbeing are more prioritized. Today I pray that my steps can be order and I can reap the benefits of all life's blessings.

Whispered Prayer of the Day

Back in the day it was common to run next door and ask a neighbor for a cup a rice, or sugar, or what have you. I got home today and rummaged through my pantry to find something suitable for a meal with substance. At first glance, it appeared I didn't have enough rice. I thought to myself, I could run next door to ask my neighbor, but I quickly changed my mind. Thankfully, I had found just enough rice to make it stretch.

In that moment, I said a silent prayer to be a better neighbor.

When you say you're tired, what do you mean? Physical fatigue? Mental weariness? Emotional enervation?

This Mindful Monday take a deep dive into what makes you tired, then pray for whatever it is that is making you tired. Take some things off your plate (if you can). If you can't, try to fit in periods where you RELAX!!

•Take a fifteen minute walk around your job building or neighborhood,
• Listen to some classical music or some jazz and focus on all the instruments
• Read some Poetry or look at art by your favorite local artist (Derek Berry , Roscoe Burnems , Georgia Nubia, Clementia Whitney-Nelson are a few of my favorite-- check them out)
•Take a nap!
• Create boundaries!
