After the conquest of Istanbul, the traders and educated administrators of the Byzantines who left Istanbul returned to the city at the call of Ottoman Emperor Fatih Sultan Mehmet. Fatih, who issued a decree for the Orthodox Greeks who settled in Italy, Aegean Islands, and France to return to the city, stated in his decree that the Orthodox could educate in their own languages and worship freely in their places of worship.

The school established in Fener in 1454 with the agreement between Fatih Sultan Mehmet and Patriarch Gennadios was known as the Patriarchate Academy or Greek Great School for centuries.

In the Patriarchate Academy, where many translators serving in high positions of the Ottomans, as well as high religious officials, patriarchs, and lords were raised, subjects such as classical philology, literature, theology, ancient and contemporary philosophy were taught.

After 1861, the educational institution that turned into a high school giving classical education moved to its present building in 1881. New departments were added to the school built by Architect Dimadis in 1903 with the aim of training primary school teachers. After the proclamation of the Republic, it took the name Fener Greek Boys' High School.

The Fener Greek Boys' High School, the largest building after the Süleymaniye Mosque among the buildings on both sides of the Golden Horn, most of the materials used in the construction were brought from the city of Marseille in France. Architect Dimadis, who also graduated from Fener Greek High School, completed the school construction he started after the castles he made in Italy and Spain in 5 years.

Pay close attention to the Medusa head on one of the columns. It's a conversation starter! 🗿🐍

So, the story of Medusa... She was THE beauty standard, charming everyone, gods included. She lived with her forever young sisters in Athena's (Zeus's daughter) temple. But she was mortal. 😍👸

Poseidon, sea king & Zeus's bro, was head over heels for her. So much that he trespassed in the temple and overstepped boundaries. 😱💔

Athena got wind of it, was FURIOUS, and turned Medusa and her sisters into Gorgons. Medusa's stunning hair - snakes now. Her face... horrific. One look at her & you're a stone statue. 😡👹

❤️ Beautiful Inside of Hagia Sophia 🕌

📸 1: Thanks for .iyasar

📸 2: The apse mosaic

All mosaics with images got axed during Iconoclasm 😲. But post 843, the art form bounced back at Hagia Sophia with the Apse Mosaic 👏. It shows Virgin Mary on a gem studded throne, cradling baby Jesus. 🎨👶👑

📸 3: The Dome

Hagia Sophia is HUGE for a church 🏰. Its main dome soars 55m high with a 31m diameter 📏. Marble, stone, and brick. that's what it took to build it 🧱. Plus, special earthquake resistant bricks from Rhodes for the dome 🌍

📸 4: Columns and Marbles

Emperor Justinian went all out for Hagia Sophia's rebuild 🏗️. He sourced stuff from old structures across the empire 🗺️. Got 8 big red columns from Heliopolis, Egypt 🇪🇬, and more from Ephesus's Temple of Artemis & Syria's Baalbek 🏛️. Plus, marbles of all types and colors.

📸 5: Two Angels in the Apse

Archangel Gabriel on the right 🕊️, Archangel Michael on the left ⚔️. Gabriel's depiction is mostly intact, but Michael's? Just a piece survived 😔. Thought to be added in the 9th century ⌛.

📸 6: Dome Angels

Every corner of the dome has Seraphim angels, said to guard God's throne in heaven 🙏. East ones are mosaics, west ones are frescoes 🎨.

📸 7: Emperor's Gate

Hagia Sophia's biggest entrance, only for the Emperor & fam 👑. 7m oak door with bronze frames 🚪. Legend says it's made from Noah's Ark planks 🚢. The 1st mosaic ever found in Hagia Sophia is there 🧩.

Hey there, bath buffs! 🌍 Have you ever experienced a , aka ? It's a traditional spa ritual that's going to leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated! 💦🧖‍♀️🧖‍♂️

First things first, what's a Hammam? 🤔 It's a centuries-old bathing tradition where you get to sweat out your worries in a steamy room, followed by a scrub-down that'll make your skin glow! 💆‍♀️✨

Sounds intriguing? Wait till you step inside! Hammams are usually housed in stunning marble buildings, often with domed ceilings and decorative tiles. It's like a spa day in a palace! 🕌💎

Don't forget the hammam etiquette! You're usually given a peshtemal (a traditional cotton wrap) to wear. Remember, when in Rome, do as the Romans do... or in this case, the Turks! 👘😉

Ready for a scrub? An attendant (tellak for men, natir for women) will scrub away your dead skin, then give you a soothing soap massage. Feels like you're on cloud nine, right? ☁️😍

And here's the cherry on top: a relaxing cup of Turkish tea or coffee after your session. Sip and enjoy! ☕👌
