Congratulations to this year's nominees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Today we celebrate Dionne Warwick. As the Brill Building churned out complex, jazz-inflected pop, a singer was needed who had the control, taste and technique to handle their unusual melodies and tricky rhythms. There was only one choice: Dionne Warwick.

Congratulations to this year's nominees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Today we celebrate Todd Rundgren. If anyone in rock can be said to have done everything it's Todd Rundgren. From psychedelica to pop rock to art-rock experimentation (along with a long and important producing career), Rundgren has proven a master of all.

Congratulations to this year's nominees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Today we celebrate Rage Against the Machine. Combing aggressive hip-hop and metal with a furious political anger, Rage Against the Machine created a five-sided fistagon of sound that broke through the apathy of the 90's and got people listening.

Congratulations to this year's nominees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Today we celebrate the New York Dolls. Glammed out in makeup, stockings and heels, the Dolls played an amped-up, chaotic, and in-your-face version of old-fashioned rock and roll, shocking audiences and giving rise to both glam and punk.

Members: David Johansen, Arthur Kane, Billy Murcia, Jerry Nolan, Sylvain Sylvain, Johnny Thunders

Congratulations to this year's nominees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Today we celebrate LL Cool J. Pop music is built for teenagers, and LL Cool J, a teenager himself, crafted a youth-oriented but still hard-hitting style that brought hip-hop to the hip kids of broader America. Later he moved the genre into a smoother R&B vibe.

Congratulations to this year's nominees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Today we celebrate Fela Kuti. Long before other artists would get more attention for it, Fela Kuti combined the music of his native Nigeria with funk and jazz, opening the world's eyes to polyrhythms, West African percussion, and a limitless potential of possibilites.

Congratulations to this year's nominees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Today we celebrate Carole King. King is already inducted for her songwriter work in the 60's, but her solo records, with their personal-but-polished lyrics and pure Laurel Canyon sound, inspired a whole new generation of singer-songwriters.

Today we celebrate Chaka Khan. "I'm every woman", Chaka Khan famously sang, and with the way she dominated funk, soul, rock, pop and disco, it's easy to see that she was indeed every woman, no matter the genre or decade.

Today we celebrate Jay-Z. If anyone could be said to have perfected hip-hop, it's probably Jay-Z. He built the first real rap empire on lyrics that manage to be personal, brash, and clever. No matter the beat, he makes it his own, and he makes it better.

Congratulations to this year's nominees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Today we celebrate Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden always understood the inherent theatricality in metal, and forged a sound based around operatic vocals, history-inspired lyrics, and a flawless twin-guitar attack. They set a whole new standard for the genre.

Congratulations to this year's nominees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Today we celebrate the Go-Go's. Punks were always supposed to be too cool for pop music, but nobody told the Go-Go's. Coming up in L.A.'s punk scene, they crafted some of the most remarkably catchy but still unabashedly rocking music of their era.

Today we celebrate Foo Fighters. When grunge packed it up in '94, many were wondering if rock was over for the decade. Enter Foo Fighters, who high-octane, high-sincerity style provided a road map for the 90s, and proved rock still had some life in it.

Congratulations to this year's nominees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

Today we celebrate Mary J. Blige. As r&b and hip-hop were set to dominate the 90's, it took an artist with a top soul diva's vocal chops and a street-sharp edge to combine the two. Mary J. Blige was that perfect artist who served as an arrow to point the way ahead.

Alexi Laiho kept a certain brand of neo-classical thrashing shred alive during this new millennium, playing with a renowned proficiency and unbeatable energy that few could contend with. He was one of modern metal's unquestionable icons, and it's a shame to think of what more he could have done.

It's a common misconception that Eddie Van Halen invented most of the techniques he's associated with. While tapping, dive-bombs, and virtuoso speed certainly existed, he combined them in such a jaw-dropping way that they went from being obscure or occasional tricks to full-on requirements for every new guitarist wanting to showcase their stuff. Like Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen changed the playing field. After him, there was no going back.
