Did you know...
The Ferris wheel was first built in Chicago for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. At 264 feet it towered over everything on the expo grounds. After several take-downs and reconstructions, it was finally blown up with dynamite in 1906. Currently the highest Ferris wheel in the United States is the High Roller in Las Vegas measuring 550 feet.

The RKO Hillstreet, 8th & Hill -- Looking south on Hill toward the theatre c.1931, shortly after the signage was redone to call it the RKO Theatre. It's a detail from a California Historical Society photo in the USC collection. Our page about the Hillstreet: https://losangelestheatres.blogspot.com/2018/10/hillstreet-theatre.html

Note the Alhambra Theatre half way down the block. The front of the Alhambra's marquee is unreadable but the end panel saying Bill Haines and Marie Dressler would lead one to believe they're running "The Girl Said No," a March 1930 release. Here's the Alhambra page: https://losangelestheatres.blogspot.com/2018/12/alhambra-theatre.html

In the 1950s, the sale of TV sets and the boom in programming made TV America’s favorite source of entertainment. To attract buyers, manufacturers and advertising agencies created many interesting ads that tried to convince people to buy a TV set. Some of these cool TV ads are collected in this article: https://bit.ly/3NpkK0P
