WITH GREAT SADNESS WE ANNOUNCE THE UNTIMELY PASSING OF POLO LEGEND CARLOS GRACIDA
Tragedy again has struck the polo world with the untimely death of polo great Carlos Gracida. Carlos was injured in a fall while playing in the Freebooters Classic 14 goal tournament this afternoon. He was flown to the trauma unit where he later died from brain injuries sustained in the fall. Gracida was a ten goal legend who maintained his rating for over fifteen years until his retirement from the high goal circuit. His achievements were worldwide ,winning tournaments in the United States, England, Argentina and in his native Mexico. He was a nine time US Open winner, a five time Argentine open winner with the infamous La Espadana team and the Ellerstina team. Carlos was also a winner of the British Open, and Queens Cup. In Mexico his winnings were the infamous Camacho Cup and the Mexican Open.
In recent years Carlos began playing the Grand Champions fall and spring tournaments with his sons Carlitos Jr. and Mariano. His passion was polo which he had passed down to his two boys and could be seen fieldside at their games giving some fatherly advice.
In 2012, Carlos Gracida was inducted in the Polo Museum Hall of Fame for his lifetime achievements in polo.
Carlos Gracida will be missed around the polo fields. We extend our condolences to Carlitos, Mariano and brother Memo and the entire Gracida family.
