Another great Match Fishing event kicks off soon as we will be hosting the Northern Qualifier of the Garbolino Club Angler of the Year event at Lindholme Lakes, on Wednesday September 2nd. If you’re planning to be there and haven’t read your emails, read this:

We are now having a rolling draw, from 8.30am to 9.30am. Please bring your order confirmation email. When you arrive, please register, pay your ÂŁ10 superpool money (if you wish to enter) then at the same time we will make and record your draw.

You will then be able to enter the fishery and proceed to your peg or visit the shop and cafe if you want to. Please be aware that Lindholme has a fishery pellets only rule, so you may need to buy some bait. Please stick to the 2m social distancing guidelines. Masks or face coverings must be worn inside the shop.

For a full set of fishery rules please visit www.lindholmelakes.co.uk

The lakes and pegs used will be announced on the day. The match will be fished from 11am to 4pm.

The results and payout will be announced on the day, please observe social distancing rules.

The lucky qualifiers go through to the prestigious final at Barston Lakes in October for the chance to win prizes, cash and glory!

If you haven’t yet entered and you fancy your chances, go to www.shopatdhp.co.uk

We hope you enjoy your day, good luck and stay safe.

**UPDATE**

Important Garbolino Club Angler Of The Year Information

During the first lockdown phase, we announed that the Garbolino Club Angler Of The Year has been postponed and we will aim to run the qualifiers and final as soon as possible in accordance with government guidelines.

We've had emails from anglers over the last few days asking if the first qualifier at Lindholme, that was previously scheduled for tomorrow, is going ahead. To reiterate what we said previously, the event has been postponed so there is no qualifier at Lindholme tomorrow.

It's not all bad news though, with match fishing being given the green light by the government, we are currently working on new dates for later in the year and we're hoping these will be available to you next week, so stay tuned!

In the meantime, please stay safe and enjoy your fishing.

Important Garbolino Club Angler Of The Year Announcement

We at DHP strongly believe in following the guidance from the governing authorities and listening to all our fellow anglers concerns with regards the Government Lockdown and the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak.

As such, the Garbolino UK Club Angler of the year qualifiers and final will be postponed. At this stage we still plan to run our competitions as soon as possible and have spoken to all our venues with regards rescheduled dates. As this period progresses, we will provide a further update on our proposal for the competition for 2020. This decision has been made with a heavy heart, but we strongly feel it is the best one possible at this time.

This just leaves us to say that from all of us at Match Fishing and Pole Fishing magazines. Please stay as safe as you can and we wish you all the very best at this unprecedented time.

Thank you for your patience, understanding and continued support.

Political support growing for end to lockdown restrictions on angling and other outdoor pursuits

National newspaper publishes letter from four MPs

As the government considers which restrictions on the coronavirus lockdown it might safely begin to lift in Thursday’s scheduled review, a campaign led by the Angling Trust - the national governing body for one of Britain’s most popular pastimes - has attracted significant support at Westminster.

MPs of all parties are signalling their support for proposals from the Angling Trust in a report entitled ‘When We Fish Again’ has been submitted to Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove and the Fisheries and Sports Ministers. It draws on experience in other European countries where angling in some form has been allowed to continue during the pandemic with no negative impacts. In fact, countries such as Germany, Holland, Denmark, the Czech Republic and Norway have less deaths from coronavirus than UK, France, Spain, Italy and Belgium where it has effectively been banned.

Parliamentary supporters include former Sports Minister Tracey Crouch, Vice Chairman of the Conservative 1922 Committee Sir Charles Walker, veteran Labour MP Jon Cruddas and North Cornwall MP Scott Mann.

The four MPs have today had a letter published in the Daily Telegraph stating:

“We are writing as a cross-party group of MPs to signal our support for the lifting of the coronavirus restrictions on low risk outdoor activities, such as angling, which can be pursued while maintaining social distancing. We believe that the Angling Trust’s proposals for the safe return of angling, put to Ministers in its ‘When We Fish Again’ report, provides a carefully thought through template for the resumption of one of the UK’s most popular activities.”

Sir Charles Walker MP, himself a keen angler and Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Angling Group, added:
“The Angling Trust has produced a fantastic and detailed template as to how we can return, in a safe and responsible fashion, to the sport we love. The Trust has now lodged its carefully thought through plan entitled “When We Fish Again” with a number of Ministers and Sport England and it provides a sensible and pragmatic way forward.”

The report is backed by national angling and fisheries groups including the Canal & River Trust, Salmon & Trout Conservation, the Institute of Fisheries Management and representatives of the angling trade which is estimated to be worth a total of ÂŁ4bn to the UK economy.

Other European countries are easing back on outdoor activities where research has shown a minimal risk of contagion. On May 4th angling is set to resume in Belgium and the Isle of Man have already lifted restrictions on the sport.

Former Sports Minister Tracey Crouch MP added:
“Along with many colleagues I’ve already made representations to the government supporting the type of phased return for recreational fishing proposed by the Angling Trust. Allowing people to safely reconnect with nature is important in these stressful times.”

Labour MP Jon Cruddas added:
“Our parks in London and other urban areas are rammed with people seeking fresh air and recreation. Allowing anglers back on the bank is clearly the right thing to do and will help ease the pressure on other open spaces.”

Scott Mann MP said:
“Angling is a pursuit where you can easily be distant from one another, it would make perfect sense for this to be one of the first areas when lockdown is lifted. Fishing has many physical health benefits but also has many mental health benefits as well.“

Angling Trust CEO, Jamie Cook said:
“We have demonstrated to MPs and, hopefully, to government ministers that angling in the UK could be permitted as a safe, accessible, outdoor activity delivering huge benefits for mental health and wellbeing and why it should take its position at the front of the queue when restrictions are reviewed. We are delighted with the support we are receiving from our public representatives for our phased guidelines under which angling for both disabled and able bodied could be safely permitted without increasing the risk of COVID-19 transmission when the government begins to ease restrictions.”

Weston’s Wonder-Matches!

Popular commercial holds 298 peg virtual match, and now has a sponsored virtual festival on the calendar!

Oswestry based angling village Weston Pools have been entertaining anglers throughout the lockdown period - by holding free to enter virtual fishing matches.

Last weeks event caused the popular holiday destination a headache though - as they had more anglers than pegs!

Venue manager, Darren Humphreys explained: “What started off as an idea to keep some of our regular anglers entertained has gained massive popularity lately - last Sundays match had 298 anglers on it, which wouldn't be a problem if we had enough pegs!

We ended up having two virtual events running simultaneously, the venue fished well too, with weights in excess of 220lb needed to win.

The matches have been great to be honest, giving rise to loads of banter from the anglers on social media, and providing a welcome escape from the grim times we are in at the minute.”

Anglers are invited to register to fish on the Weston Pools Fishery page, and Darren then aquires weights for each competitor for each hour of the event from a random online generator. At the end of the match, the highest weight wins.

“It has made a nice change, as we have had some really unexpected results. Anglers who usually do well at the venue have been made to look very average to be honest, Kristian Jones for example, has put in some particularly dull performances!”

For next week, the venue has something even more spectacular up its sleeve:

“We have a free to enter Weston Tri-Cast Fjuka Spring Festival next week, with prizes for the top twenty! We will open registration on our Weston Pools page on Monday, and the festival will be Wednesday/ Thursday/Friday.”

“The top twenty will all receive a bag of Fjuka Bait and a Tri-Cast cap, and the winner will receive a Weston Pools polo shirt too!”

Rachael Philbin, who runs Weston Pools along with husband Mike added: “What Darren has been doing is absolutely brilliant, and its nice to see that he has been keeping people entertained.”

“Here at Weston, we pride ourselves on our excellent fishing, but also holding a great social event, and under normal circumstances our clubhouse is thronging with anglers having a laugh and a pint after our matches.

Sadly, the matches are on hold at the moment, but its nice to know we can still provide some quality entertainment for anglers. We look forward to welcoming anglers back here to Weston once all this is over.”

To book on the Weston Tri-Cast Fjuka Spring Festival, log on to the ‘Weston Pools Fishery’ page next Tuesday May 5th.

What a fantastic idea!💡

On a recent feature with one of the countries top silverfish anglers Simon Willsmore, he pulled out a neat little gadget that simply slotted onto his pole float bristle to help him see his fine bristle in the poor light conditions. When a thin bristle is needed but the lighting is poor, Hydra have the answer! 🙌

Find out Simon's thoughts when he put a milled pellet groundbait up against a sweet groundbait for silverfish in the May issue of Pole Fishing.
