Determination, grit and helping others. Our story subjects are where they are today because of a choice they made to press on through to the other side of whatever they were facing ... and often because someone else was alongside, supporting & encouraging them through their journey. What are YOU doing right now to stay sane, healthy, busy, helpful and happy? Your ideas might inspire someone else who needs a bit of a push!

"I clipped a couple daffodils from the yard, put them in bottles saved from the recycling bin, and set them on two neighbors’ porches. No note attached, just a flower to brighten their day. 🌼 It’s a fun way to spread some hope."

With the developments of COVID-19 reaching our area, please remember to continue to demonstrate patience, kindness, and goodness to our fellow community members. Help others to be prepared and take special care in remembering that not everyone has the ability to work from home as many of our community members hold positions as entrepreneurs, within the service and hospitality industry, in health care, in retail, and beyond.

We urge you to be safe, courteous, and aware of the risks many are put in beyond their control. We are all better with the kindness of others. 🖤

Kevin's world was turned upside down in 1986 when his best friend Connie unexpectedly took her own life. There were no warning signs and he was left angry, confused, and guilty. With the lack of support groups through his own search, Kevin began Survivors of Su***de two years after Connie’s death in order to help others navigate through losing a loved one to su***de.

Meet Jenny Mercandetti 🙈

Jenny Mercandetti found the love of her life in her partner, Shaun Mehal, but life had different plans for the happy couple. Having been clean and sober for two and a half years, Shaun fell off the wagon and passed away from an overdose five weeks after his 34th birthday. Jenny vowed to keep his most positive aspects alive through the Mighty Mehal Foundation, which provides financial assistance to those who have successfully completed a detox program and are seeking residency in a recovery or sober-living house.

Meet Frosoula Romano.

Hidden behind Frosoula Romano’s glowing smile was a mass of anxiety, which started in high school. After trying medication for relief, Frosoula discovered a Bodypump class and later took to teaching Bodyflow—a Les Mills yoga-like program—to ease the anxiety that had affected her for years. Beyond her teachings, Frosoula is also a Reiki practitioner and doTerra essential oils consultant.

Meet Osmyn Oree 🙈

Growing up in downtown Lancaster, Osmyn Oree struggled with his identity as a member of the black community. Osmyn experienced racism not only from differing cultures, but also his own as he was often accused of not being black enough. Using his photography as an outlet to break down stereotypical barriers, Osmyn focuses on projects that challenge cultural diversity as well as the human body.

Rest In Peace Charlie.

Rest In Peace Charlie.

Press Release announcing the Death of Police Horse Charlie

It is with deepest sympathies that I have to announce the death of retired police horse Charlie. Charlie at 17 years old has been policing the City of Lancaster for the past 10 years with his human police officer partners, most recently Officer Greg Berry. Charlie a draft horse was an imposing figure standing around six feet tall at the shoulder and weighing 2,000 pounds; but he was a gentle giant and loved by many in the Lancaster County community including our police officers, their families, and our City Parks Department partners who care for our horses when the officers are off-duty.

Please keep our mounted officers in your thoughts, especially Officer Greg Berry and our friends and co-workers at Parks; Debra Berkoski, Dawn Sanders, and Stacy Stoner who provide excellent care to our police horses. Our police officers and our Parks Department partners form an incredible bond with their animal partners. Not only do they work with them on the street, they care for them many times while off-duty; feeding, grooming, taking care of their medical and other needs.

This is a heartfelt loss because we just celebrated Charlie’s retirement on December 10 and 11 with a final walk downtown and an event at their barn at Long’s Park. Charlie was transitioning to live with a wonderful couple in Lebanon County, PA. Charlie still lived with our other horses and was cared for by our officers and Long’s Park staff while preparations at his new home were being completed.

Unfortunately Charlie’s arthritis and health worsened rapidly to a point that he was in considerable pain and discomfort. Charlie has been receiving regular treatments at the Penn Vet New Bolton Center for his arthritis and is on supplements to help control his symptoms. After consultation with our local veterinarian who has treated our horses for the past 10 years, his treating veterinarian at New Bolton, the mounted unit, and Long’s Park staff we learned that Charlie’s condition will only worsen creating more pain that would be unmanageable, create more danger to the Charlie and risk of falling. Surgery was not an option due to the risks, creating more pain and distress and the surgery would not really relieve the arthritis.

We had to make the extremely difficult decision to end Charlie’s suffering; a decision that was not entered into lightly because of what Charlie has meant to the community he served, the community that continues to support our mounted and K-9 units through the Lancaster City Police Foundation. We reviewed all of the options to help Charlie and sadly this was the only option.

Charlie came to us from a farm in Kennett Square where he was a pasture mate to other horses. He was trained by our mounted officers and quickly became an asset to the unit and police bureau. He served honorably with our bureau for the past 10 years and was involved in policing many special events here in Lancaster and throughout the state to include Musikfest in Bethlehem, dignitary protection for the Pope’s visit to Philadelphia and campaigning presidential candidates who stopped in Lancaster City and County.

Charlie was provided a hero’s es**rt to the Penn Vet New Bolton Center this morning January 14th for the final procedure and his remains were respectfully cremated. We want to thank our mounted officers and Long’s Park staff for the great care they give our horses. We also want to thank Dr. Tim Van Grouw, Eastern Lancaster County Veterinarian Clinic and Dr. David Levine, University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, New Bolton Center for their excellent care of Charlie.

Charlie will be missed. Condolences can be sent to the Lancaster Police Mounted Unit at 39 W. Chestnut St. Lancaster, PA 17603 and donations in Charlie’s memory can be made to the Lancaster City Police Foundation at P.O. Box 10171 Lancaster, PA 17605-0171 or online at https://lancasterpolicefoundation.org/donate/
