The Mother Lode of Mariposa History shares the story of
the Bear Flag Revolt, from June to July 1846, a small group of American settlers in California rebelled against the Mexican government and proclaimed California an independent republic.

Bear Valley is located 11 miles northwest of Mariposa and the site of Colonel John C. Fremont’s headquarters. He arrived there after the close of the Bear Flag Revolt that resulted in taking California from Mexico at the end of the Mexican American War. He bought a 44,000-acre parcel of the Mexican land grant, Rancho Las Mariposas, and claimed it as Bear Valley.

Henry Wells and William G. Fargo formed Wells Fargo & Company 170 years ago to provide "express" and banking services to California, which was growing rapidly due to the California Gold Rush.

Wells Fargo was heavily involved in the movement of much of the gold that left Mariposa for minting. The Wells Fargo office in many gold rush towns, was as much a social hub as it was a business, where people gathered to exchange news. The photo below depicts
John C Fremont in Bear Valley.

By the end of the California Gold Rush, Wells Fargo was a dominant express and banking organization in the west, making large shipments of gold and delivering mail and supplies. Hear the story of Wells Fargo and the iconic stagecoach.

Happy Birthday Ansel Adams Feb. 20 1902 — Apr. 22, 1984
When Adams was only four, an aftershock of the great earthquake and fire of 1906 threw him to the ground and badly broke his nose, distinctly marking him for life. When Adams was twelve, he taught himself to play the piano and read music. Soon he was taking lessons, and the ardent pursuit of music became his substitute for formal schooling. For the next dozen years, the piano was Adams’s primary occupation and, by 1920, his intended profession. From his first visit to Yosemite, Adams was transfixed and transformed. He began using the Kodak No. 1 Box Brownie his parents had given him. Although Adams’s transition from musician to photographer did not happen at once, his passion shifted rapidly after spending summers photographing in the Sierra Nevada,

The Mother Lode of Mariposa History shares the story of San Francisco, Mariposa and the Gold Rush. Friday 1pm & Sunday Night at 7
In 1846, when soldier, explorer and future Mariposa resident John C. Fremont saw the watery trench that breached the range of coastal hills on the western edge of otherwise landlocked San Francisco Bay, it reminded him of another beautiful landlocked harbor: the Golden Horn of the Bosporus in Constantinople, now Istanbul. Fremont used a Greek term to name it: Chrysopylae - in English, Golden Gate. In his 1848 “Geographical Memoir,’’ Fremont added another layer of meaning: The rugged opening to the Pacific, he wrote, is “a golden gate to trade with the Orient.’’ Hear the story through the music of the summer of love.
