2021, the year that… we supposed technically “was” moreso than it “wasn’t”, but it still felt like an ungodly long stretch of time looking at the grand scheme of things, especially now that people have to keep track of the Greek alphabet for the time being. But as always, music served as one of the sole sources of respite in this otherwise frustrating year, and the crew is here to close out the year by recounting our top favorite albums of 2021. Robert brings the most concise top favorites list he’s made in a while with his personal top 20, Alex’s list expands a bit from where it was last year with his own top 15 favorites, and place your bets now as to how many times hip hop producer The Alchemist appears in Mark’s top 25 favorite albums of the year. We hope you enjoy, and here’s hoping we can finally escape this plague nonsense in 2022.

Episode 119: As the year draws closer to a close, so does this year’s convention season, capping off with Anime NYC to… interesting results, in some regards. Fun was had, enjoyment was shared, and panels brought with them plenty of fan experiences and announcements, and we’re here to recap the happenings and goings-on – plus plenty of upcoming home video talk, a look at the 2021 Oricon sales rankings, Seven Seas brokering a big deal for a popular manga series with another company, and plenty more in this jampacked show!

And do you hear that in the distance? It’s the sound of Discotek Day approaching. Prepare yourselves.

Episode 120: Another year has come to a close, and with it so does this season of the show, a season that’s seen as many highs and lows as the year itself has. But before we turn the calendar over to the new year, we have a few more strands of business to attend to, namely the fact that Discotek continues to be absolutely mad and we cherish them for it. Discotek Day happened again, as did… well, a certain show on Netflix for about three weeks, and we’ll be talking about that as well. The first one to say “ouch” gets thrown in the airlock.

Episode 120.5: Yes, it’s Christmas Eve. Yes, there’s another show up because Jump Festa decided to come back with a vengeance and also because awfulness keeps happening and this was too much for us to put off until our planned return in mid-January. So here’s 50 minutes of extra audio running down some of the biggest news items and announcements to close out the year. It’s also a solo show, recorded under not ideal circumstances that are explained in the show proper.

Welcome to the Decibel Boost Podcast album roundup for the month of October 2021. ICYMI: check out the latest episodes of PodcastONA!

Episode 116: Back after an extended break away (more on that in the intro), there is a LOT to unpack for this extra-loaded show. Between Netflix’s recent announcements and acquisitions, SPYxFAMILY getting an anime next year, plenty of dub plans from both Funimation and Crunchyroll (ODDTAXI DUB IN JANUARY), and the long-awaited release of Ninja Robots happening very soon, there’s not much time to preamble here. Enjoy the show and we’ll be back for the fall season next time!

https://www.podcastona.surrealresolution.com/podcast/episode-116-the-flame-of-the-festival/

Episode 117: After some inopportune delays and some schedule arrangements, the fall season preview-slash-review is finally here, ready to tackle the last season of a rather loaded year and close out 2021’s anime offerings the only way we know how! In the first half of this two-part episode, there are plenty of discussions to be had about how Netflix is handling their titles this season, possibly the only fan left standing for Yashahime, the reward for suffering through mediocre Digimon for better Digimon, and even some bouncing in all of the right places with a few shows that may be worth the few minutes they ask for.

Stay tuned for the second half, featuring talks about hockey, vampires, and MAXIMUM EDGE.

Episode 118: After some inopportune delays and some schedule arrangements, the fall season preview-slash-review is finally here, ready to tackle the last season of a rather loaded year and close out 2021’s anime offerings the only way we know how! In the second half of this two-part episode, it’s all about Funimation’s offerings on both their own and with their newly reunited union with Crunchyroll, containing plenty of talk about hockey, vampires, and MAXIMUM EDGE before easing things down with the boy who would be king. You can probably tell what our top recommendation is by that.

If you missed the first part, check it out and catch up, then come back to this for the complete package for the fall season. And we’ll see you next time for all of the Anime NYC roundup… and maybe a little something extra for the holiday? Stay tuned.

Episode 113: The fall season is upon us, and with it comes the end of one disappointing series and the disappointing reveal of a returning favorite, all to the dismay and bewilderment of the dais of this program. But it’s not all doom and gloom, as there are plenty of details for some upcoming Netflix projects to discuss, be it good or bad or even cautiously optimistic, some upcoming theatrical rollouts planned for the end of the year and the start of next year, some choice home video offerings to close out the year with, and a Gintama movie dub cast that seems to be the best of both worlds for fans all around. Be ready for an eventful October for this program, there’s plenty to come throughout the month with the fall season kicking off this weekend.

And there’s nowhere to go but up for Digimon now, because Tai has to go now. His planet needs him.

Episode 114: As the fall season begins and as we start taking our notes on the season at large, we have a good bit on the docket for this show – NYCC events, an update on the Cowboy Bebop rollout on Netflix, a sudden delay for… uh, an *interesting* show for the fall season, and a Kickstarter project well worth your time for checking out: DIRTY PAIR on Blu-ray with a new English dub for the classic 1985 TV series. And it’s guaranteed to deliver a much stronger performance than Comcast does with their internet service. Here’s to hoping we’re back at full strength for next time.

Welcome to the Decibel Boost Podcast album roundup for the month of September 2021.

Now that we’re starting the last third of the year, the crew is hunkering down as a number of notable high-profile releases begin to fill the various niches of the musical world and calendar for both September and even October of this year, but October will have to wait until next time.

First up: Alex delves into Metallica’s 30th anniversary celebration of their landmark Black Album release, exploring both the reissued/remastered album and the expansive 50+ track covers album created to celebrate the occasion. Next: Mark discusses the 2nd half of Westside Gunn’s latest (still unfortunately titled) mixtape, the soundtrack of Marvel Studios’ latest release Shang-Chi, and even Baby Keem’s latest album among others (…top of the morning). Following that, Robert touches on the highly anticipated debut album of Spiritbox, the latest masterpiece from tech death prog metallers Rivers of Nihil, some scattered releases from the likes of Andrew WK and Sleigh Bells, and even the underwhelming bloat of Iron Maiden’s latest effort. Finally, things close out for the month as the crew dives together into one of the most hotly anticipated albums of the entire year, as modern pop rap megastar Lil Nas X finally unleashes his debut full-length Montero unto the masses.

Episode 238 - This week: the Decibel Boost Podcast crosses the 5-year-mark, choosing to commemorate the occasion by… recapping the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards… because this is the most uneventful birthday possible, apparently. But before the crew snarks about the pointlessness of this entire variety show, there is a bit of new music to be discusses from BadBadNotGood, Maxo Kream feat. Welcome to the Decibel Boost Podcast album roundup for the month of August 2021. As the year barrels closer to the last third, the prevalence of more high-profile releases is strangely ramping up. While September and October will be the true opening of the floodgates for major releases, August had its fair share to offer. First off: Alex shares some brief thoughts on the latest demos collection from Dream Theater, the Borderline Forever soundtrack from Scott the Woz, and even the much-anticipated new album from Between The Buried & Me. Next up: Mark discusses the latest collaboration from Boldy James & The Alchemist, new Griselda offerings from Westside Gunn and Benny The Butcher, Ka’s newest project, and more. ICYMI: check out the latest episodes of PodcastONA with plenty of Evangelion talk for your ears!

Episode 111' - It probably says something about how slow a period it’s been when the only big news to talk about is the Neon Genesis Evangelion Blu-ray release, as well as its now-sold out Ultimate Edition set. But there are still a few bigger topics to discuss, like the first preview of the live-action Cowboy Bebop series for Netflix, a set of projects coming in 2022, a pair of theatrical releases for the upcoming autumn, a rather notable Sentai @ Home event, and a notable coup for an upcoming fall title. There have been a few big news items that dropped after our recording, but we’ll talk about those next time. Even we aren’t capable of bending the realms of space and time to talk about a certain Science Saru project coming later in September, but next time we’ll discuss it.

https://www.podcastona.surrealresolution.com/podcast/episode-111-you-cannot-buy-this-ultimate-edition/

Episode 112: After a few extra weeks of preparation for this momentous occasion, we are now ready to bid a long goodbye, farewell, and amen to the wild world of Evangelion with its final film, aptly titled Shin Evangelion (or that long clunky title if you prefer), the culmination of 26 years of just not going to therapy and instead making a landmark anime property instead. Whatever works, right? And we also have the first convention any of us have been to since… well, you know, along with a surprise early pickup for Funimation, even more surprises coming in October from Netflix, some continued frustration over the lack of a premiere date for Demon Slayer, and Inuyasha hitting Blu-ray in Japan… with a catch.

Evangelion: it’s some lore thing or something, I don’t remember. Sums up the whole franchise, doesn’t it?

Episode 108: As we arrive to the summer season in fashionably late style, the full seasonal crew are here to lay out the diamonds in the rough of a very meh season that seems to be as such before fall arrives for another overwhelming feast of quality content and programming. But despite being a very average season, there was still enough to talk about to make this a two-part episode. It always seems to happen in such a way.

For this first part, there are the true diamonds from Funimation that should be on everyone’s radar, a cursory glance at the spring leftovers, and even some questionable topics brought up in a show or two. But before all of that, there is a roast to be had – once again, fashionably late, but such a roasting required some assistance. There is also a precursor to what we’ll be talking about next week. May Haruhi have mercy on us all.

Episode 109: As we arrive to the summer season in fashionably late style, the full seasonal crew are here to lay out the diamonds in the rough of a very meh season that seems to be as such before fall arrives for another overwhelming feast of quality content and programming. But despite being a very average season, there was still enough to talk about to make this a two-part episode. It always seems to happen in such a way.

In this second part, the discussion of Funimation’s summer pickups continue before going to the strange pile that Crunchyroll has amassed – some good, some bad, a few headscratchers, a BAD case of polyamorous romcom-itis, and even the true best show of the season that everyone should watch because Jahy is all and all is Jahy. May her reign of dominance and minimum-wage survival be an inspiration to us all.

And yes, we will be talking Crunchyroll next time. Along with Evangelion and Discotek and Fena: Pirate Princess and CRX and everything that happened this week because EVERYTHING happened this week.

Episode 110: Welp. It certainly was a busy week, last week. Everything seemed to happen within the span of seven days, from Evangelion hitting Amazon, Stone Ocean confirmed to be for Netflix in December, the Crunchyroll sale being closed and finalized, Discotek at Otakon, a LOT went down in a very small amount of time. And we’re here (and Sketch, too, he’s back) to run down all of the insane developments in the industry, the drops that have left us scratching our heads, and the surprises that have us rather giddy in anticipation for what’s to come. It’s an extra-packed show, so get comfortable and enjoy the wild ride.
