WHY MPs WANT THIS ACADEMIC YEAR CALLED OFF.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
It should be remembered that educational institutions just as other institutions were called off in March due to the outbreak of the novel Coronal Virus. It was such an unprecedented time that the government had to disperse concentrated areas to slow the spread of the virus.
The government,after a period of 60 days in a lockdown, started easing different sectors to breathe life in the economy but a few sectors including education have remained clogged for different reasons.
Yesterday, Members of the Parliament while meeting the Vice Chancellor's Forum requested to government to annul this academic year citing lack of preparation and safety for their children.
It remains logically disturbing as to why the legislators pushed for the easing of lockdown on riskier sectors like arcades and taxi parks than educational institutions managed by literates who can easily follow the SOPs.
Many of these members of parliament have their children in international schools which basically do not follow our local school calendar and could be the reason for gagging the local sector.
Schools are organised institutions with law abiding Ugandans who treasure their health and that of their children.
The education sector employs over 600,000 Ugandans directly and indirectly and more than half of this number work in private schools that depend on school fees collection which was last collected in February.
If you annul the academic year without paying teachers, you're rendering over 300,000 people jobless. Teacher are parents, children to some people and bread winners to African families that harbour scores of relatives.
We can't afford losing this academic year with the recent statistics showing how many girl children have conceived during this space of 70+ days. There is an increase in domestic violence against children and their safe haven lies in schools.
