British Columbia's high school cross country season is fast approaching and MileSplit BC is looking for passionate individuals to join our team of contributors!
This includes videographers, photographers and interviewers, to cover and promote BC high school cross country across the province. Excitement filled the air as the Harry Jerome Indoor Games returned to British Columbia, as athletes graced the Richmond Olympic Oval with a mixture of running, jumping and throwing on Saturday, February 3rd. Co-sponsored by the Richmond Kajaks Track and Field Club and the Achilles International Track & Field Society, this event set the tone for the rest of 2024, with the outdoor season just around the corner. Rust has been busted!
Excitement filled the air as the Harry Jerome Indoor Games returned to British Columbia, as athletes graced the Richmond Olympic Oval!
If this weekend at the Golden Bear Open is any indication of what is in store leading into outdoor season come March, we are definitely in for a treat. Two big names on both the provincial and national stage, Pishon Haughton and Ryan Lofstrom, made the trip from British Columbia to Alberta to shake off the rust and run a few rounds of the 60m dash at the Butterdome, located at the University of Alberta.
The 2024 indoor season is indicating some great races to come once the outdoor season starts! Especially between top runners, Haughton and Lofstrom.
Located in North Vancouver, the Handsworth Secondary Cross Country Team is situated between Cleveland Park, Capilano River Regional Park and Upper Mackay Creek Park to name a few, which means a lot of trail running - a distance runners dream. Now add an experienced coach and dedicated athletes into the equation it is no wonder the Royals have had and continue to have great success at the provincial level and beyond.

Arjun Sandhu has burst onto the scene in pure running fashion - fast. Coming off a track season which saw him become a national record holder, he continued the momentum into this past cross country season becoming the BC High School Junior Boys Provincial XC Champion!

Arjun Sandhu, has a bright future ahead. In 2023 he set a U16 National Record on the track and won the BC HS Junior Boys XC Provincial title!

15-year-old, Talia Phangura wins the U20 shot put at the Bell Canadian Track and Field Championships with a mark of 12.70m! She wins by almost a full meter 😮💨
Matthew Erickson took the win the Men’s 800m at the Jerome Classic with a time of 1:46.43. ⚡️ A graduate of LV Rogers Secondary in Nelson, BC, Erickson now attends the University of Oregon. During his time in high school he became a 10-time BC Provincial Champion and so far this 2024 season he has placed third in the 800m at the PAC-12 Championships and ran at the NCAA West First Round!
The 2024 BC High School Champion took on the pros at the Jerome Track Classic and came away with a personal best of 16.35m in the shot put!

In a close final, last year’s bronze medallist Maxwell Holmes of Pacific Academy took the gold this time around in the Senior Boys 800m running 1:53.33. Bernardo Sada won the silver in 1:53.57, and Noah Louwerse took bronze after winning silver in the 1500m on day 2. See what Max has to say about his win...
Roman Yeterian continued his season’s winning streak in the Senior Boys Discus, throwing 42.06m. Cole Presley was second with a throw of 41.66m, and Janek Kaila took third with a throw of 37.30m. See what your 2024 Senior Boys Discus Champion had to say…
BCSC DAY TWO In the Senior Boys 100m Final, Adam Sieben of Duchess Park took home the title with a time of 10.71 into a slight headwind. Pishon Haughton won the silver also running sub-11, and just an hour after winning the hurdles, Fagbamiye won the bronze.
BCSS DAY ONE More from Elijah Clarke on his win in the Junior Boys 1500m Steeplechase. The Grade 10 from Burnaby North Secondary won the event by over four seconds, running 4:29.30!
Rory O’Brien of Sutherland took the win in the Senior Girls 1500m at the VS2S Zone Championships with a time of 4:57.53. She was the only competitor in the field to dip under five minutes. She also placed second in the 400m with a time of 1:01.22 seconds and second in the 800m with a time of 2:20.83, really showing her range! See you at BCs ⚡️
Spencer Blomerus talks us through just one of his three individual races from the Vancouver Sea to Sky Zone Championships. He won the Senior Boys 400m with a time of 51.33 seconds. Last year at the 2023 BC High School Championships, Spencer was the fastest qualifer in the Junior Boys 400m, with a time of 49.77 seconds. He went onto win the title in the finals with a time of 51.05 seconds. Let’s see what he can do at the upcoming 2024 championships!
On cruise control… Chloe Symon, last year’s Provincial Junior Girls champion in the 400m and runner-up in the 800m, dominated the two events at the VSSAA Prelims. Symon ran 57.87 for a 6-second win over second place and a 2:17 for a 9-second win!

BC’s Gold Girl: Camryn Rogers is the 2023 World Hammer Throw Champion! Rogers became the first Canadian woman to win a world title in 20 years, making it double gold for BC as fellow BC athlete Ethan Katzberg won the men’s event.
